Hoshino Ryo is an utterly ordinary high school student. The only unusual thing about him is that, ever since he was little, he has turned into a volleyball in his dreams, getting hit back and forth with no way to fight back.
Hoshino Ryo: I know this is my trial, my hardship. :)
But then he discovers that his trials aren't over.
Because of his impressive height, a suspicious-looking upperclassman has set his sights on him and keeps trying to recruit him for the volleyball team.
Thinking back on four years of getting hit, Hoshino Ryo: Nope!!!
That Oikawa guy: Huh, what? No problem? Great!
Because of Seijo's club system, he's forced to pack his things and join the volleyball team. But he stubbornly insists that he can't play volleyball and is only willing to be the manager and do odd jobs.
However...
When Oikawa is practicing his serves like crazy, he says, "Don't you know that serving like that is inefficient and likely to get you injured?"
When Kyotani crashes into a teammate during a practice match, he says, "Wow, stealing the ball without even scoring. You never cease to amaze me."
When Kindaichi fails to land his attacks over and over, he says, "Are you seriously darting your eyes around like that? Are you a sieve the other team sent over?"
At last, he throws in the towel. "Do you people even know how to play? If not, let me do it!"
Oikawa grins. Just as planned. √
Seijo's volleyball team gets a new outside hitter, raising the team's average height all by himself. Whenever he steps onto the court, he wears a very stern expression and looks like someone you shouldn't mess with.
Oikawa: Oh, he must've had another dream last night.
Iwaizumi: Oikawa must've kept him late for extra practice again yesterday.
Everyone else: Oikawa must've been acting like a pest again.
Hoshino Ryo in reality: Tch, why has my pen pal gone missing again?
Hoshino Ryo has had the same pen pal for years.
When he first started having those dreams in elementary school, he was under so much psychological pressure that he wrote a letter to an upperclassman who had already graduated.
But he'd written one digit of the address wrong, and the letter was delivered to someone a street away.
To his surprise, the person wrote back with a sincere reply and patiently answered his questions.
After that, whenever Hoshino faced a problem he couldn't solve, he would ask for the other person's opinion. As time went by, they became close pen pals who kept in frequent contact.
Recently, though, he noticed his pen pal always disappeared on certain set days, and those days happened to be when volleyball matches were held.
Then...
He discovered his pen pal was the opposing team's captain.
Hoshino Ryo: Hmm... Anyway, let's meet in person first!
Theme: Train hard and win the championship
