The villagers did everything they could to make offerings to the immortal, and soon they were living comfortably in the barren mountains with food and drink in abundance. Over time, the immortal’s offerings grew more varied. A scholar who had fled to the village from a neighboring one recognized the words on the packaging: Milk, soy milk, potato chips, bread, instant porridge, self-heating hot pot... There were even boxed meals full of meat, served with snowy-white rice that only needed heating! Buy one and take a bite, and it was so delicious it left everyone dazed. They all said the immortals’ food was every bit as good as they’d imagined! Later, the square immortal turned into a little house, and its goods became more varied still: sturdy pots and bowls, warm quilts, books that taught all kinds of skills...
