During the struggle for the throne, Ling Gui unexpectedly lost the use of his legs. From then on, he lost heart and gave up on power. The emperor gradually grew displeased with him, bestowing on him the title Prince Su and granting him Nan Province as his fief. He was to leave for Nan Province immediately after his wedding.
The marquis’s household didn’t want its legitimate daughter to marry him and suffer, so they used a few tricks to transfer the long-established marriage arrangement to their fourth daughter, a concubine-born child.
And so Xia Yishuang was inexplicably sent off in a bridal sedan to marry Ling Gui.
The day after the wedding, Xia Yishuang met Ling Gui for the first time. He sat in a wheelchair, his handsome, heroic face lifeless, and an oppressive aura around him that warned everyone to stay away.
To keep herself safe, Xia Yishuang tried everything she could to cheer him up.
She found him all sorts of unusual novelties to play with and pass the time.
She took his measurements and made him new clothes.
She searched for rare medicinal ingredients and renowned doctors to treat his legs.
Xia Yishuang was always smiling, as though nothing could ever bother her. Ling Gui thought her smile was painfully dazzling and often avoided her, but he couldn’t stop her from climbing in through the window.
He disliked her constant chatter by his side every day, but he never shut her out.
A year later, an imperial edict arrived from the capital summoning Ling Gui back.
Before they parted, Xia Yishuang placed a sachet in his hand. “It’s a long journey. May you arrive safely.”
Ling Gui held her hand. “Wait for me to come back.”
The capital’s political landscape shifted, and Ling Gui reclaimed his former position and was named crown prince.
Overjoyed, Ling Gui returned to Nan Province, but Xia Yishuang was gone. All he found was a letter of separation: “You are noble and I am poor. I know I am not a suitable match for you, so I am asking to end our marriage. Please take care and find someone worthy to accompany you.”
Three years later, Ling Gui accompanied his mother to their ancestral home to pay their respects to their ancestors. On a remote mountain path, he saw a woman carrying a basket of herbs on her back and leading a pretty little child by the hand, singing a clear, lilting song as they walked through the mountains.
He unexpectedly crossed paths with Xia Yishuang again.
With red eyes, Ling Gui gritted his teeth and called out, “Xia. Yi. Shuang!”
Xia Yishuang smiled just as she had before. “Your Highness, it’s been a long time.”
