Lin Chuxin started dating someone as soon as she began college.
It started when she couldn't sleep at one in the morning and scrolled through her social media feed. She saw her new classmate, Chen Shuyang, having a midnight meltdown while grilling lamb.
On impulse, she commented: No cilantro.
Chen Shuyang could cook with his mind, knew how to time the cooldown on his Magnetic Shroom, watched every Douyin video she tagged him in, and played Snake with her. Lin Chuxin soon fell in love, and they stayed together for two years.
During their sophomore year, they had to do an off-campus internship. Lin Chuxin wanted to go to Lincheng, while Chen Shuyang wanted to go to Jincheng.
Lincheng had a thriving social media scene, while Jincheng was a good place to start a business. But it also meant they'd be apart for three months.
Chen Shuyang said, “Then I'll choose Lincheng too.”
Lin Chuxin disagreed. “Go where you want to go. Don't choose based on me.”
They were already having problems, and then Chen Shuyang became incredibly clingy. The moment he woke up, he'd call her, and he'd keep the call connected while they slept. Whenever someone spoke to Lin Chuxin, he grew suspicious. “Who was that guy talking to you just now?”
Lin Chuxin took a deep breath. “Let's break up, Chen Shuyang.”
After the breakup, Lin Chuxin was back to lying awake at one in the morning and scrolling through her social media feed. She used to count sheep, but now she couldn't even do that anymore.
Counting sheep made her think of Chen Shuyang.
At three in the morning, Lin Chuxin gave up and counted Chen Shuyang until she fell asleep. In her dream, they weren't in a long-distance relationship, and Chen Shuyang was holding a box of the mung bean pastries she liked.
Without a word, Lin Chuxin started beating him up. “Do you know how I have to carry an insanely heavy power bank every day because you insist on sleeping with me on a call?”
From then on, Lin Chuxin dreamed about Chen Shuyang every day.
In her dreams, Chen Shuyang was eager to learn and changed whatever she told him to. Since it was all a dream, Lin Chuxin gradually let herself go and got more and more outrageous.
After all, even when she was barefaced, Chen Shuyang would still tell her she was beautiful.
After the three-month internship ended, Lin Chuxin returned to campus and wondered how to face her ex. They hadn't been in touch for two months, but she'd seen him every day in her dreams.
She still liked him, but just thinking about the 24-hour calls they had before breaking up made her feel suffocated.
Then, as soon as she got off the bus, Chen Shuyang came over as naturally as could be, took her suitcase, and handed her a box of walnut and jujube cake. “You said yesterday you wanted some.”
She had said she wanted walnut and jujube cake yesterday, but... she'd said it in a dream.
