Meng Lingzhang takes part in a variety show with her boyfriend.
One early morning, she goes downstairs in her nightgown to look for something and finds a man sitting by the bar. In the dim night, the loose glow of the chandelier falls on his clean-cut features. He carries a faint scent of cedar, and his presence is somewhat cold and melancholic.
He's the artist the production team specifically invited to raise the show's artistic ambitions.
A fleeting flicker of something passes through Meng Lingzhang's eyes. She walks up and greets him casually. "Hi."
The man looks up, his deep gaze sweeping lightly over her before lingering briefly on a dark red mark on her neck. He makes no attempt to respond.
Meng Lingzhang returns upstairs. Her boyfriend comes sleepily out of the next room. "What's wrong? Why aren't you asleep?"
Meng Lingzhang taps an itchy spot with her slender fingertip. "A mosquito bit me. I went to see if the production team had left any insect repellent or ointment, but I couldn't find any." As she speaks, the faint scent of cedar seems to drift from her fingertip to her nose.
Familiar, long missed, and bitter.
Her boyfriend puts an arm around her shoulders and leads her inside. "Go to sleep for now. I'll buy you some first thing tomorrow."
Beside the glass railing, the man at the bar appears not to have heard any of it. But in a place the camera can't capture, gloom lurks in his eyes.
