After transmigrating into a book, Shen Lichen becomes the eldest disciple of the protagonist gong, an immortal lord, in an old-school melodramatic romance.

In the story, he secretly loves his master, sowing discord and spreading rumors between his master and the protagonist shou. But in the end, he's moved by their love and even sacrifices his life for the protagonist shou when their forbidden master-disciple romance is exposed.

He is punished by the heavens, and no one even claims his body after he dies.

After transmigrating into the book, Shen Lichen diligently follows the plot and saves money, planning to fake his death and retire somewhere peaceful when the time comes.

But then he encounters the one unexpected variable: the villainous Demon Lord, Gu Xuanxi.

According to the plot, the Demon Lord falls for the protagonist shou while fighting the immortal lord and uses every means at his disposal to claim him. For the sake of peace between the immortal and demon realms, the immortal lord is forced to agree. That night, however, the immortal lord orders Shen Lichen to disguise himself as the protagonist shou and leave with the Demon Lord.

The Demon Lord abducts Ling Yunhe to make the immortal lord suffer, but discovers it's his eldest disciple instead... and finds him unexpectedly captivating.

Before long, he falls head over heels.

The Demon Lord smiles tenderly. "You know you weren't the one I originally wanted..."

He takes the warm, dry hand in his.

Shen Lichen says, "Ling Yunhe is a high mountain flower. Even if the Demon Lord can't have him, he shouldn't settle for an inferior substitute."

The Demon Lord's smile stiffens. "All right... an inferior substitute."

Later, the plot still goes off the rails. The immortal lord gives everything he has but can't get his eldest disciple back, and in a fit of rage, starts a war between the immortal and demon realms. Corpses litter the Nine Provinces.

Everyone says Shen Lichen is to blame.

Shen Lichen is captured and awaits heavenly punishment.

His expression is calm, as if he's accepted his fate.

But the Demon Lord's eyes are red. In the pouring rain, he stands there in a wretched state, unable to tell Shen Lichen that he'd fallen for him long ago.

In front of everyone, the immortal lord declares that there will be no more war. If anyone doubts him, they can sever his immortal bones, break his meridians, and send him to face heavenly punishment, but... no one is to touch Shen Lichen.

Shen Lichen decides the time is right. He fakes his death and leaps off a cliff, then lives a happy, peaceful retirement in the mortal realm.

What he doesn't know is that they're all frantically searching for him, including the immortal lord who sent him away with his own hands and later desperately demanded him back, and especially the Demon Lord who coldly called him an "inferior substitute."
