So when there was something to gain, she didn't hesitate to make him her ex. She personally sent Xie Huan into the laboratory.

In the apocalypse, no one's life is secure. Sang Wan never thought she'd done anything wrong, until her superior ordered her to operate on test subject 035 and perform a dissection to learn more about the source of human supernatural abilities.

And 035 was the designation assigned to her ex-boyfriend after he entered the institute.

For several reasons, Sang Wan had no choice but to escape the institute with the amnesiac Xie Huan.

Xie Huan had completely changed after losing his memories. He seemed gentle and harmless, yet caused Sang Wan one headache after another.

Their wanted posters now covered the mutated tree trunks along the streets, and Sang Wan had to play both mother and father, cleaning up the messes Xie Huan left behind.

For instance, while Sang Wan was fighting to protect Xie Huan, her arm was bleeding nonstop. The next moment, Xie Huan brought her a bag of hemostatic medicine.

Before Sang Wan could even thank him, she realized the medicine had come from a supply truck belonging to the institute. The superpowered escorts had already caught wind of them and surrounded them.

Sang Wan: ...

After Xie Huan “helpfully” made things worse several times, the two were cornered with nowhere left to run. Sang Wan flew into a rage and decided to part ways with him.

Just as she was about to confront him, she saw Xie Huan standing beneath the moonlight, crushing the skull of the institute's most powerful superhuman with his bare hands.

Xie Huan slowly turned his head, his face refined and ethereal. “Wanwan, what did you just see?”

Later, Sang Wan discovered that Xie Huan's change in temperament wasn't caused by amnesia. He had awakened a split personality, and every one of his personalities secretly coveted her, cold and full of resentment.

Xie Huan had liked Sang Wan for a long time. His love had quietly taken root and grown uncontrollable, even after Sang Wan betrayed him and abandoned him.

On the first day he became a test subject, he thought, It's fine. She just hasn't figured things out yet. She'll come looking for me soon. In his first month as a test subject, he thought, Once she becomes a senior researcher, she'll come save me. In his first year as a test subject, they thought, If she doesn't show up soon, we'll take the entire institute with us into eternal sleep.

This was originally an installment in the Hero's Journey arc. I liked it so much that I decided to expand it into its own story.

The female lead is awful and has a low moral compass, so don't expect too much from her. The male lead comes from a long line of hopeless romantics.

Everyone in this apocalypse is mutated.
