The Tang Dynasty's First Female Official

History student Chen Wan wakes up one day as a seven-year-old servant in the palace women's quarters.

In public, her mother is cautious and meek; in private, she is crazed and deranged, whispering in Chen Wan's ear every night.

You were once the daughter of a noble family. Your miserable state now is all her doing.

That woman holds great power, so study hard.

You must avenge the Shangguan clan. You must kill her.

"Kill who?" Chen Wan asks, growing more and more certain she's heard this before.

"Wu Zetian."

Chen Wan's vision goes black.

At fourteen, after making it through the palace women's official selection against all odds, she finally stands before the supreme emperor and empress.

"What is your name?" The empress stands before her and lifts her chin, smiling.

"Shangguan Wan'er." Chen Wan gazes at the pearl at the corner of her lips, unable to hide her excitement.

Everyone at court knows that there is a female official in the inner palace, the emperor's sharpest blade, who sways the court and is feared by all.

At first, I only wanted to get close to her and witness this epic history of a female emperor. Later, I wanted to help her make up for the regrets of history. In the end, as I stood by her side and watched her receive the adoration of countless people and take the long-desired throne, I finally understood: I had long since become a part of this history.

The female emperor: "If a man can sit on this throne, then so can I."

Chen Wan: "If women also take their place on this chessboard, the struggle for the Central Plains is far from decided."
