Fu Ke, a death god who was determined to become a god of love, failed her career-change exam 99 times and finally went off the rails.
This time, she wakes up as a cannon-fodder female character universally hated by the internet in a dating-show novel, and one who gets written off right at the start. Damn it!
Cupid says, “My lady, this mission is to help the female lead and the second male lead find their happily ever after.”
Fu Ke turns anger into joy. “Not playing by the rules? That’s what I’m best at!”
The dating-show miniseries Heartbeat Beyond the Line begins airing. The second male lead, an award-winning actor, declares with confidence, “There’s no way I’ll fall for someone because of a role.” Fu Ke scoffs. “Yeah, right. Men.”
During the mutual-pick segment, Cupid says, “The second male lead is being indecisive again and doesn’t plan to pick the female lead.” Fu Ke glances at the mini soul-snatching knife in her hand, then pushes the female lead forward. “Why don’t you think it over carefully, Mr. Movie Star?” The next second, the second male lead stiffens at the sight of a small sickle embedded deep in the blackboard behind him.
Haters: [Fu is throwing herself at him for screen time and almost hurt my Feng. Get her off the show!]
During the date segment, Cupid says, “The second male lead still hasn’t held the female lead’s hand.” Fu Ke grumbles as she puts on an invisibility cloak and follows them around, secretly trying to bring them together. Just as the two are about to hold hands, she can’t help sneezing. On a dark, windy night, the second male lead’s tall frame shudders three times.
Bystander: [Is it just me, or did I hear Fu Ke’s voice?]
Haters: [Fu’s clingy fans, stop pretending to be bystanders. You really are just like your idol, always trying to leech off him.]
As the ratings soar, Cupid sends an alert. “People are shipping you with the second male lead!” Fu Ke is shocked. “They dare ship that crack pairing? The audience is a lot braver than the second male lead.”
Then behind-the-scenes footage comes out. The second male lead, who never starts conversations with the female guests, asks Fu Ke, who’s threading a needle, “Need any help?” Fu Ke gives him a cold look. “No.”
The audience then sees him droop his head and quietly sit down beside her.
Bystander: [Wait, who’s throwing themselves at whom?]
Shippers: [Ahhh, she’s so tsundere and he’s so in love. Perfection!]
The haters fall silent.
As Feng Xiao grows more and more clingy, Fu Ke’s alarm bells ring. “Don’t come any closer!” But then she discovers that a top-tier star and the god of love’s childhood friend are secretly competing over who gets to play her male lead in the miniseries.
Fu Ke tries everything she can think of to get everyone’s romantic storylines back on track. Finally, she says, “Actually, I’m divorced and have a child.” As she speaks, she drags Cupid out from where he’s been crouching nearby.
Cupid: [Pitiful, weak, and helpless]
Feng Xiao stares at Cupid in silence for a long moment, then is the first to drop to one knee.
That night, the comments go wild shipping them, and Fu Ke nearly loses her mind.
