When a Shadow Guard Kills His Master

Original title: Notes on Observing an Immortal Shadow Guard

From the night her fiancé broke up with her, Qiao Zhiyao's "ordinary" life became surreal.

As a researcher, she had always been certain:

Reality isn't a novel, and no technology can make humans immortal.

The brain is the human body's control center. Ghosts don't exist.

She had no twin sister, no split personality, and no missing memories.

But one day, a note appeared mysteriously in her lab. It read:

[Don't ask the strange man with a shadow about anything that happened a thousand years ago.]

[If someone wearing black falls into a frenzied state, kill them immediately.]

[Ignore anyone you encounter after 21:00 who is carrying a long blade.]

[You can trust someone who looks exactly like you, as long as you're certain they're human.]

What nonsense.

She paid it no mind.

She thought she could go on living her quiet life, but when she opened her door, she found a man with a long blade, a blindfold, and black clothes, whose shadow resembled a Cthulhu monster.

He was quiet and seemed dependable, as if there was no need to be careful around him at all.

...Except he seemed a little clingy?

Not sure. She'd have to wait and see.

.

One night a year later, her hapless ex-fiancé showed up, asking to get back together.

Qiao Zhiyao kept a straight face as she pulled over the guardian standing in the dark, dressed in black, blindfolded, and carrying a blade.

"Look, this is my new boyfriend."

Her ex-fiancé stormed off. The silent, cold, blind evil spirit let his long blade clatter to the ground, his expression full of anguish.

Just as Qiao Zhiyao thought he was about to have another episode,

the monster fell to his knees, looked up, and tugged pleadingly at her clothes. "You know what you're saying... right?"

"Of course. But first, answer a few questions."

"Yes."

"What were you to me before?"

"I... I was your deathsworn guard."

"Why did you become like this? What happened to your eyes?" She removed his blindfold, revealing the empty sockets of a ghost.

"I did something wrong." He let go of her. "This is my punishment."

"What did you do?"

"I... I killed... killed you." He clutched his long blade. His skin flushed red with emotion, and his body trembled from time to time.

Yet the lower half of his face beneath the veil was so fevered and devout.

"So please, grant me an end."

So his endless pain and nightmares could finally cease.

An "ordinary" researcher x an immortal madman
