At seven years old, Tan Yixi transfers from China to Japan because of a change in his parents' jobs.
One day, while happily drawing, he is suddenly hit in the back of the head by a ball, splattering paint all over him. Tan Yixi doesn't get angry. He holds his head and asks what kind of ball it is.
And so he gets the first volleyball of his life and his first Japanese friend. No, his "ballet" and childhood friend.
Seven-year-old Suna Rintaro hits a kid his own age with a ball on his very first day learning volleyball.
So his mom makes him bow and apologize to the kid and the kid's mother.
Somehow, before long, he and that guy become friends.
They attend volleyball lessons together, join their middle school's volleyball club together, make it to the national tournament together, and then get scouted by Hyogo Prefecture's Inarizaki High School together...
-
Watching the new first-years join the Inarizaki volleyball team, the coach is both delighted and worried.
He's delighted because there are so many promising players, and winning the national championship within three years seems within reach.
He's worried because they are all a handful, each with a strong personality and a difficult temperament.
Especially Miya Atsumu, Miya Osamu, Suna, and Tan Yixi:
one pair of twins who are the least like twins imaginable, always getting into fights over the slightest disagreement; and a pair of childhood friends who insist on doing everything together, more like twins than the Miya brothers.
The four of them are known as the volleyball club's two signature acts and its two great contrasts.
-
Tan Yixi believes that he and Rintaro will always be the closest of friends, the most in-sync teammates, and each other's best confidant. As their high school graduation approaches, they receive offers from different professional teams.
Then Rintaro tells him, "I don't want to be your friend anymore, Yixi."
If they were lovers, no matter what happened, even if they played for different teams in different countries, they would always be together, wouldn't they?
