Chen Sanliang's Love

The Yue opera Chen Sanliang tells the story of the talented Li Suping. When her father passed the imperial examination, he was denied an official post because he refused to pay a bribe, and he died of anger. Forced to sell herself to pay for his burial, she gave half the money to her younger brother, Li Fengming, so he could study and succeed. From then on, she lived in a brothel, where she adopted the name Chen Sanliang and sold her writing, not her body, charging three taels of silver for each essay.

When she refused to become a wealthy merchant's concubine, a corrupt prefect subjected her to brutal torture. To her shock, the prefect turned out to be none other than her younger brother, Li Fengming, from whom she had been separated for twelve years. She was overcome with grief and rage. In the end, her sworn younger brother Chen Kui, who had risen to the post of imperial inspector, investigated the case and cleared her name, while Li Fengming was stripped of his official position and reduced to a commoner.
