How Could a Romance Scam Target Me?

There are people whose eyes always gleam with clear-eyed foolishness, making them the darlings of every scammer out there.

He Xiao's roommate is one of them. During college, he fell for scams of every size forty-four times, and no two were alike.

His roommate asked He Xiao for tips on how to avoid getting scammed.

He Xiao smiled faintly and pulled out his completely empty wallet. "Just don't have any money."

Later, his roommate fell victim to a pig-butchering scam and lost his entire tuition overnight.

He Xiao couldn't sit still. He vowed to get justice for his roommate. "Give me the app you used to chat with the scammer!"

On the day he installed the app, He Xiao received a message. The sender called him "big brother" right off the bat and asked if he needed money.

Qiaoqiao: [Send me your bank card number, or your friend's. I can transfer you some money.]

He Xiao: Heh. Have scammers gone back to the basics now? Wasn't this trick popular years ago?

Wanting to teach the scammer a lesson, He Xiao didn't report them right away. Instead, he started chatting with "Qiaoqiao."

During winter break, three months later, his roommate realized that He Xiao had no intention of going home.

He Xiao smiled an honest, guileless smile, his eyes shining with clear-eyed foolishness. "I'm going to visit my partner, hehe."
