The Girl's Wild Dog

[The print edition is now available. Weibo: @Qu Xiaoqu] [A modern romance about rekindled love, interspersed with school-day memories] 1. Everyone at Xuande Private High knew that Geng Ye had four major sins: Blond hair, a motorcycle, tattoos, and a revolving door of girlfriends. Everyone said that no matter how handsome a scumbag like him was, he was bound to become a delinquent sooner or later. Geng Ye thought so too. Even he never imagined that one day, for a girl named Biezhi, he'd dye his blond hair black, scrap his motorcycle, get his tattoos removed, and, for the sake of her words, "My boy is destined for the clouds," struggle his way into flight school. Then he got her declaration that they were breaking up. Biezhi left without looking back. She wouldn't even let him see her face. 2. Seven years later, Biezhi returned to China and started a job at Shanhai University. Her colleagues in the department planned a welcome party for her at "Mingyue-Jingque," the most famous bar in the western district. Rumor had it the bar's owner was an ace pilot from a powerful family. The bar had two great attractions: one was a million-yuan bottle of liquor called "Bulgarian Rose," displayed in a case right in the middle of the bar. The other was the owner himself. Half the women who came to the bar were there to sleep with him. Biezhi laughed softly when she heard this. As it happened, the owner showed up that night, and her colleagues pulled her around to look. He'd just woken up and was coming down from the second floor, wearing a black T-shirt, half his belt hanging loose. With a strong waist and long legs, he stood lazily at the center of a crowd, a cigarette dangling from his lips, and glanced over his shoulder. Their eyes met. They stopped. Three seconds later, Geng Ye looked away as if he didn't know her. 3. Biezhi had rarely drunk so much. Near closing time, she felt a little dizzy and got up to leave. Just then, the bartender came over and set down the bar's most prized bottle of vintage liquor, the one said to be its greatest attraction "The boss is treating you." As everyone stared in astonishment, the young man leaning against the bar lazily crossed his long legs and raised his glass from across the room.
