I, He Mingguang, am the most insignificant unemployed drifter in the lower district of the City Beneath the Radiant Descendants.
I put the common folk's philosophy into practice: I keep my head down and follow the rules. If I can lie down, I never stand; if I can stay silent, I never utter a word.
That was until the day the radiant coins my parents had earned with their lives could no longer cover the City's exorbitant taxes.
I made a decision that went against everything my ancestors had taught me: to become a scavenger outside the Nine Trades, risking my life on high-paying commissions from the upper class and venturing to the surface.
But those lofty upper-class folk still refused to let us live in peace.
They all say the surface is a hellish wasteland overrun by demonspawn, but I want to see it with my sisters, the women with whom I have shared life and death.
This lawless wasteland, where people devour human flesh, can at last see the return of long-lost light.
