Qi Siqi graduated straight into unemployment. He had a pretty face but was a lazy little good-for-nothing who wouldn’t lift a finger.
Luckily, a windfall dropped into his lap: he inherited a funeral home and skipped sixty years of struggle.
The funeral home was deserted, deep in debt, and rumored to be haunted. Given Qi Siqi’s nature, where he’d rather lie down than do anything, it was sure to go under within three months. He might even lose his life in the process.
That was what everyone thought.
Until the funeral home received its first corpse.
In the middle of the night, the corpse pushed open the door of the freezer and hopped toward the funeral home’s owner, who was giving off a strange fragrance. It opened its gaping maw.
Qi Siqi kept his head down, playing on his phone without even looking up. “Could you close the door, please? Ever heard of saving energy? Electricity is expensive.”
The corpse: “.”
Come on, man. Throw me a bone.
After that, all kinds of creepy corpses from across the country kept coming to Qi Siqi: a body floating in a frozen lake, a three-eyed female corpse, a headless mummy... The funeral home’s business thrived, and smoke from the crematorium could be seen for miles.
Some people even saw occult bigwigs tugging at Qi Siqi’s hand. “I found our grandmaster, guys! He wants to come home with me!”
Qi Siqi lay down on the spot. “Too far. I’m not going.”
A jealous nobody sneaked into the funeral home to see what Qi Siqi was up to, only to find
Qi Siqi unfastened his shirt cuff, revealing a slender wrist bone and an arm covered in tattoos. He raised his hand and punched the female ghost crawling out of the TV twice, then shoved her back inside.
The nobody: Shoved her back inside?!!
The female ghost: (stunned) (crawls around gloomily) (gets punched again) (retreats into the TV) (sobs)
“Go on,” Qi Siqi said through a yawn. “What injustice did you suffer?”
Qi Siqi had spent half his life away, only to return and remain the same overworked funeral home owner, burdened with a heavy workload and only two days off every five.
He traveled between the realms of the living and the dead, bore witness to life and death, endured partings, tore evil spirits to shreds, and took up his pen to cry out for justice.
And in the shadows, a pair of eyes was always watching him. Tentacles formed from condensed ghostly energy caressed him and wrapped around his ankles, intent on swallowing him whole.
