[Dream in Splendor]
A literary girl who rubs the grade director the wrong way X a rebellious aspiring Chinese medicine doctor
Yu Meng X Shen Qihuang
Also known as The Story of Two Atypical Geniuses Outmaneuvering Their Grade Director
As soon as Yu Meng and Shen Qihuang enrolled, their names landed on the first line of the “students to keep an eye on” notebook kept by Cheng Min, the grade director of Sichuan High School’s Class of 2019.
These two troublemakers knew each other’s character even before Cheng Min did. It started during military training, under a blazing sun that had everyone boiling with anger. After the drill instructor finished speaking, Cheng Min still wanted to go on and on.
The entire grade of new students stood under the blazing sun, wishing they could kill him. But seconds later, the impassioned broadcast was abruptly cut off, leaving only metallic static and the students’ uncontrollable cheers.
Yu Meng watched a tall young man calmly walk into the empty broadcast room and come out just as composed. His gaze lingered when it landed on her, then he walked away as if no one else existed.
When a teacher questioned her, Yu Meng understood the unspoken agreement and chose to say nothing.
Later, they met again outside Cheng Min’s office.
He asked her, “What did you do to get on his bad side?”
“He damaged my personal property. What about you?”
“I’m not as impressive as you. I just unplugged the broadcast again.”
That was how Yu Meng learned the name of the rebellious boy who could match her: Shen Qihuang.
That year, they sat leaning against each other on the riverside Bund, shivering in the river breeze. Looking at the rows of mirrored skyscrapers behind the Oriental Pearl Tower, they thought of the Sichuan High School Monument, the Anchuan landmark built at great expense by the school’s alumni, and laughed a little.
“Do you really like this city so much?”
“She once lived on the top floor of that little apartment, looking down over all of Shanghai. In just one year, she astonished the entire Shanghai literary world.” Her voice sounded a little distant. “She really was a genius.”
For once, he looked at her very seriously and said,
“Yu Meng, you’re allowed not to be a genius.”
She looked back at him just as seriously, each word firm and clear.
“I’ve never doubted one thing: we’re both geniuses.”
Just like now, I’m not afraid this is a dream of splendor.
[The Elephant Tower]
Anchuan lies in a remote corner of southern Zhejiang. To the south, it has no coastline like Fujian; to the north, it cannot reach the prosperity of northern Zhejiang or Shanghai. You can tell from the size of the highway toll station that it is an unmistakable county town.
“It’s backward and old-fashioned, but the cost of living is absurdly high. Social obligations hold so many things hostage, and the locals are very closed off. There’s only one good thing.”
“What?”
“There’s an Elephant Tower.”
The four gilded characters “Anchuan High School” have been emblazoned across the county’s shoulder for a hundred and twenty years.
From the top scholar of the late Qing dynasty to the school’s annual push for Peking and Tsinghua today, six hundred years of changing fortunes have been crowned again and again by this Elephant Tower. What good fortune for Sichuan High School’s students and all of Anchuan to share in its glory.
In Anchuan, students at Sichuan High School have many things to envy. The Elephant Tower will lift their dreams, and for those three years they need not look back or worry about what lies behind them.
Many years after leaving Sichuan High School, Yu Meng rested her chin on her hand and recalled vaguely, “I really used to hate all the school’s inhuman rules. For almost two out of those three years, I was thinking about how to escape. But I can’t deny that I kind of miss it.”
“I met so many people there.”
“Because it carried my dream of being a genius... No, everyone’s dream of being a genius.”
In The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus wrote that we must imagine Sisyphus happy, because the freedom of struggling upward is enough to fill a person’s heart. Yu Meng deeply agreed.
“If you’re gifted, and Anchuan feels too small for you, then don’t be afraid to dream this dream. In the past 120 years, you’re not the first to be so wildly free. Treat these three years as a dreamwalk. When you wake, there will be a road ahead.”
[You were born with extraordinary gifts, and I’ll shield you from wind and rain these three years. Please, make sure you keep dreaming.]
Notes:
1. This is part of a series, with a focus on everyday life. Same old place, same old setting. A small city in southern Zhejiang, with the new college entrance exam system. The final class to use the old textbooks, from 2019 to 2022, and the first class under the one-point-per-subject assignment system.
2. A small ensemble cast, with many supporting characters and side couples. Zihuai, Junyu, and Xiaoxiao, the senior from the next book, will all appear. “Grade director” means a grade-level dean, or what some places call a director of student affairs.
3. The author is terrible at writing blurbs. Dream in Splendor is the second book in the Elephant Tower series. If you’d like to get a feel for my writing, check out the completed first book, Seeking the Wind. The leads, Mengmeng and Shanzhi, are in parallel classes in the same year. They have different personalities and different paths of growth, but are equally full of youthful passion. There are no descriptions of romantic intimacy before adulthood. Both are each other’s first partner, but neither is the other’s first kiss. Please add my next book, Breaking Dawn, to your reading list.
4. The author is a university student with lots of classes and assignments. I’ll try to update regularly, but my schedule may be a little unpredictable. Thank you all for your support! I’m new to this, so constructive criticism is welcome. Malicious attacks are not!
5. Please don’t try to identify real-life inspirations. Let’s keep the discussion civil. Thank you!
Theme: Who knows? A wrong turn might be a beautiful dream.
I admit that I have a double standard. Mengmeng's love story feels very reasonable. When I saw Shanzhi's love story, my heart skipped a beat. (Although the previous chapter said it wasn't the first kiss, I guessed it.)
In addition to preferring the female protagonist, it may also be because, from Mengmeng's perspective, she thought she would never be able to contact Shanzhi again (but it was Shanzhi who broke off the connection on his own initiative. From a certain perspective, the "right to contact" belongs to him, so there is no excuse for "he can no longer contact his sweetheart" when he has so many relationships [crying])
And Mengmeng only has two chapters, both of which are quite serious.
Shan Zhi talked for many paragraphs, and in the beginning I was laughing and disdainful of Rachel. I thought I had guessed wrong/they didn't talk, but when I saw they did talk later, it was a bit torn. Scumbag woo woo woo
No attack, just curious questions
If you already have someone you like, will you still be interested in other people of the opposite sex?
Since people with low moral sense will not improve their moral sense because they have someone they like in their hearts; why would they improve their moral sense just because the person they like is in front of them and can be in contact with them?
Earlier, Mengmeng read philosophy and Shanzhi read gossip. When they talked about open marriage, is this a foreshadowing of Shanzhi's low moral sense?
Happy ending, sprinkle flowers! Qimeng, like Xunfeng, has always been with me in high school. What's amazing is that both Hua Lan and Yu Meng have a part of me. I studied competitions and wrote articles. I ran around every day and didn't want to stop. My writing path is much different from Mengmeng's. I ended up in the third grade in the first national competition, and now I can't write anything. "I spent the whole morning staring at the newly created document and watching the birds flying outside the window" (this is certainly not the original sentence but Mengmeng and I are in a similar state), so I once wrote in my diary that I envied Yu Meng. She is indeed a genius, whether she is limited to genius or not. When I saw the end, I was suddenly relieved. I am currently preparing for a very important writing competition, and I am still anxious that I will not be able to write anything. But so what, we are all geniuses.
Thank you Xiao Jiang for your article and the world you created. Waiting for your next book~
It's finally over.
Qimeng accompanied me through my senior year of high school and witnessed my transformation from a high school student to a college student. The feeling of watching Qimeng before and after the college entrance examination is very different.
I was also obsessed with the white moon like Yu Meng, but I did not get recognition for my writing at the end of my senior year like her, and even the final ending was full of regrets. Looking back at my senior year in high school now, I can only glimpse from those broken words and intermittent ink dots the struggle between me and words in those days. My words are like the rain in the yellow plum sky, they can never freely express the echo in my heart, and they twist and turn into the complaints of giving up.
I still remember that noon, 20 days before the college entrance examination, my friends were having a party in the tutoring room, and I was nestled in the classroom watching Teacher Xiao's "The Golden Age". I wrote in my diary, "I recall my third year in high school again. I really went a long way that year, and even in the next three years, I was going back.", "Everything now seems to be looking back."
After I was admitted to the college entrance examination, I thought I could finally put aside the brooding about the past and move forward boldly. After all, "life is about making up."
But it wasn't until recently that I discovered that wasn't the case. I can't abandon the old me who keeps looking back. Time has passed but I still stay where I am. Hua Lan, Yu Meng, and Yu Zhou, Zhou Luozhi, both built a part of me, and they both accompanied and witnessed my rapid growth. But growth does not mean reconciliation.
The sweet dream of searching for the wind is over, but my raving is still going on, maybe it will never end.
I always rely too much on memories, am too nostalgic, and find it difficult to digest the bitterness of separation. But emotions don't last forever, and I can't understand the complex emotions myself.
Both Xunfeng and Qimeng told me, just like what I wrote in my notes before the first model test: moving forward, there will be a way.
Thanks for accompanying me, happy ending. FWJ
Sister, I really like your words and your expressions. In the ordinary years, the ups and downs and the ordinary, she/they are all fighting for a better future. They have close friends and such good teachers around them. Their story is really a beautiful dream for me, watching the souls of Class 11 burn, watching Yu Linxi and Shen Shan go around in circles, watching her/them bravely dream. I really like the Elephant Tower, it will lift everyone's genius dreams. In fact, I often worry that I am not talented enough, that I am not top-notch in everything, and that I have never been favored by the teacher. I don't seem to have any dreams. I can only keep feeling and feeling the beautiful worlds and beautiful dreams in the books. I really like your novels, please keep writing! [Red heart]
Book Review "Elephant Tower·Dreams" (and "Looking for the Wind")
"I'll show you how crude and scrawled those years of youth were,
But it always fascinates me.
He is the only one around me,
But dare to go to the crazy dreamland where there is no daylight. "
Yu Meng's romance, Shen Qihuang's care, many fairy tales are established in literature and art.
Some people meet again after a long absence, and some people have planned it for a long time.
Mengmeng's dream of studying in the HKUST finally became what the teacher called a genius.
She has seen through many dreams, seen many realities, and has become the architect of other people's dreams.
——Writer.
She is strong and sober, has a sensitive self-esteem, and has dreams that are never broken and dreams that are always being reshaped.
The tea-white moon or the pale moon will eventually be relieved - in the wind on the terrace in midsummer, or in the busy traffic on the Bund in late winter.
"I don't see the point"
"Then don't look"
When she met her own knight, she understood him tacitly.
But the knight will always follow Her Highness the Princess, even if they meet again after a long separation.
In the philosophical corner, there are dim lights.
"Those so-called tender evidences spied on,
In fact, it is only one ten thousandth.
In a deserted corner,
There are more romantic secrets. "
When I read "Xunfeng", I was in the second semester of the third grade of junior high school. After reading "Xunfeng", I stopped reading the novel and pretended to prepare seriously for the exam. In fact, with many people around me, I created a dream that was by no means simple - it was a good dream that would never end. Becoming Bai Yueguang, it's hard to make up for it, and in an extremely strict junior high school, it has a dream-like ending.
I am in Shanghai. I did not get into my dream school, but I did get into a school that is similar to my dream school. Even in the eyes of Shanghainese, it is better than my dream school. But it's Bai Yueguang after all.
So just like Yu Meng, the bald geography teacher in Class 11, the head teacher, and the grade leader are indeed the strictest in the school, and the grades he leads will also have better grades. The literary club and the photography club collaborated to publish postcards during the carnival... As I read them, I thought, how could there be so many coincidences in this world.
I am very good at writing essays. When I was watching Xunfeng in junior high school, I excerpted many sentences, and then I would write a composition specifically for one of the sentences. I no longer write narrative essays in high school, so I recommended it to the girls who are now in their third year of junior high school... "Elephant Tower" is the most beautiful campus novel I have ever read, especially the writing style, which is unparalleled.
I may watch it from the third year of junior high school to the third year of high school, letting "Elephant Tower" run through the four most important years of my student life.
The meaning of the novel's existence may be to build a beautiful dreamland, and readers will unconsciously want to imitate the fairy tales in it - such as the desire to go to the Bund with someone.
But what's more important is that even reading two lines will give people the motivation to jump up and study - in the third grade of junior high school, I was studying in a daze, but after taking a look at Xunfeng, I immediately came to life.
"Perhaps, it's a dream drawn by a match"
In short, I really like the "Elephant Tower" series, and I am also looking forward to the next dream drawn by the author [Come on] [Come on] [Come on]
A beautiful dream that belongs to everyone. It is pure white, spans thirty years, and has watercolor foam like light bulbs. Coexist. Suddenly I remembered a sentence I wrote before, "There is always an angle. They embrace each other and occupy each other." Maybe it can describe such an ending. The angle can be used as a measure of time. Two free and useless souls. To touch, to separate, to possess. As the moonlight fades, I give you the loyalty of a person who has never had faith, and I give you the vague certainty in the eternal afterglow at this moment. A clear dream is like a happy wind, longing for waves and ringing in the sun. Wandering in the mountains, my heart returns home. So two hearts landed. "It's better to carefully set the tone. Clear, bright and shaky blur." It's the same words I wrote before, and it fits the scene inexplicably. It's vague, but it's also certain. It's a genius' dream. It's also the acceptance of growth. "I think, therefore I am." It is their dream and the moon, and it is also projected on everyone. Just wandering back to where the grass is greener. "The pool under the shade of elm trees is not a clear spring, but a rainbow in the sky." It is a wrong path and a beautiful dream.
I have time to write a review. I have always felt that Teacher Meng is a bit like me hahaha, maybe because we both like literature and have similar experiences. I remember when the article was finished, I said in the comment area that I was preparing for a competition, but now it turns out I didn't make it to the semi-finals. A sad outcome. He came with the complete text of Qimeng. As you read the extras bit by bit, you will feel as if the dust has settled, as if you have experienced an adventure. Maybe I know better what it means to return to the old world and what I need to do to achieve it.
It's too late and I won't be able to express myself... I want to talk about what happened to Ms. Meng and Teacher Meng after they were discovered in Shanghai. Those two chapters gave me a really strong sense of shock and gunpowder. At the same time, it is written very realistically and has a strong sense of rhythm. Ms. Meng's crazy questioning made me feel like I was on the scene... I wonder if it was because I had had a similar experience. In fact, each of our parents has some "East Asian parent" problems. They may appear to be overly controlling and emotionally expressive, or they may turn into indifferent needles and a logic cycle of "I'm good for you." Ms. Meng is the epitome of that. The extra chapter doesn't seem to specifically describe the follow-up between Qihuang and Meng's teachers and their parents, but that's enough. I would rather they could escape but wonder what reconciliation would look like. I also like how Xiao Bao handles the parent-child relationship here (I really like everything).
Xiao Bao really likes Zhang Ailing, but I haven't read it yet. Can high school sophomores understand Zhang Ailing? I think certainly not... But I saw Zhang Ailing in your eyes in both Qimeng and Xunfeng. This is a very novel experience that reading has brought me. Thank you Xiao Bao.
Perhaps the most important thing is that Teacher Shanzhi and Meng accompanied me through another period. When I'm walking alone in the dark and can't see the way forward. I'm awkward, sensitive and proud. When reading Qimeng, I always feel like I am hiding among the words.
I look forward to your next book and always look forward to it
Finish spreading flowers [come on]
In fact, I rarely write long reviews
I saw a comment on Station B during self-study:
"One day I will go out and take the old me with me to find the original me."
It feels very consistent with the Elephant Tower
Whether it's looking for the wind or dreaming
Shanzhi is a very casual but gentle person, although I have been told that he has a low moral sense hahaha
But he is really serious about Mengmeng
The one that impressed me the most was probably
"The price of the shirt is nine pounds and fifteen pence. Today is the fifteenth day of the lunar calendar, and the moon is full tonight. Is there someone who would be honored to meet you? Beautiful lady."
At that time, I saw that he almost gave up while abroad, but after thinking about it for a long time, he decided to return home, and tears started to flow down his face.
They finally found their way back to when they were high-spirited
Very brave, even a little reckless
but very lucky
Because it's hard for most people to look back
Mengmeng has been trapped by words for too long
She needs a breakthrough
Hence the "white moon" and "pale moon"
This line is buried beautifully.
The first half of the article is actually a bit depressing (maybe due to my own reasons)
But it suits Mengmeng's state very well
The road is too long, it is inevitable to get into trouble
There are many good people in Sichuan, and they move forward unconsciously with their dreams
Finally, it's yourself
Fortunately, none of them became boring adults
Fortunately, they will meet again
I will always be moved by the elephant tower painted by Da Da.
"You will eventually become who you are becoming."
I wish everyone can find the answer among the countless choices.
Peace and joy, everything goes well
The first time I read this book was during the winter vacation of my sophomore year in high school. I accidentally discovered this novel one night. I remember clearly that there were only eleven chapters at the time. I finished it quickly, and then it was a long process of waiting for updates, with many interruptions. TT I really like Qimeng. Ben, I'm almost a sophomore now. I'm in the finals week but I can't study. I'm also confused about my future. The night before yesterday, I suddenly wanted to watch Qimeng, so I looked it up again. After the college entrance examination, I changed my mobile phone number and registered again. All the previous subscriptions were gone. TT So I started again Full subscription, I re-read this novel that meant a lot to me in high school, and I missed my high school life very much. I feel that my character has many similarities with Mengmeng's character. I really like your writing, which feels full of vitality. I also like the stories in your book. It's such a comfortable writing style. I feel that every character is alive, like the people around me. Many sentences in the book are also placed in high school excerpts. Qimeng accompanied me from the second year of high school to the third year of high school. It is really my favorite novel. Yu Linxi and Shen Shan in the parallel world, please stay happy! Looking forward to the publication of Qimeng! ! !
Author, I really like your words in this book! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (Personally, I feel much more mature than in the first book? Personal feeling!)
I have read "Xunfeng" more than ten times, and I really like the pair of top students. This book of Dreams brought me a better experience (I followed it until 1:30 midnight and read it in one go)
I am very confused now, Yu Meng and the girls in this story really helped me a lot! I really like the characters in it.
Ling: When will the physical book be released? Can you wait online? It's very urgent! !

I look forward to your next book and always look forward to it
Finish spreading flowers [come on] In fact, I rarely write long reviews I saw a comment on Station B during self-study: "One day I will go out and take the old me with me to find the original me." It feels very consistent with the Elephant Tower Whether it's looking for the wind or dreaming Shanzhi is a very casual but gentle person, although I have been told that he has a low moral sense hahaha But he is really serious about Mengmeng The one that impressed me the most was probably "The price of the shirt is nine pounds and fifteen pence. Today is the fifteenth day of the lunar calendar, and the moon is full tonight. Is there someone who would be honored to meet you? Beautiful lady." At that time, I saw that he almost gave up while abroad, but after thinking about it for a long time, he decided to return home, and tears started to flow down his face. They finally found their way back to when they were high-spirited Very brave, even a little reckless but very lucky Because it's hard for most people to look back Mengmeng has been trapped by words for too long She needs a breakthrough Hence the "white moon" and "pale moon" This line is buried beautifully. The first half of the article is actually a bit depressing (maybe due to my own reasons) But it suits Mengmeng's state very well The road is too long, it is inevitable to get into trouble There are many good people in Sichuan, and they move forward unconsciously with their dreams Finally, it's yourself Fortunately, none of them became boring adults Fortunately, they will meet again I will always be moved by the elephant tower painted by Da Da. "You will eventually become who you are becoming." I wish everyone can find the answer among the countless choices.
