Overnight, Ji Heng fell from the throne of the crown prince to become a helpless invalid, left to languish in the mire.

Sima Yue, a disgraced eunuch, was a fine blade. Ji Heng found him useful, so he promptly made him bait in his game, leading him around in circles.
Unable to bear the humiliation, the bait tried to assassinate him in bed, only for Ji Heng, wearing thin socks, to plant a foot on his face and pin him down.
Ji Heng sneered. "You little beast."
If he had the guts, he could kill him right there in bed.

On the night he was summoned to the bedchamber, Ji Heng was frail and sickly, clutching his chest as he coughed again and again.
Sima Yue, whom he had not seen in years, stood with his yellow robes in disarray. He killed a palace servant who had been gossiping, then casually tossed his bloodied sword at his feet.
His large hand lifted the curtain and tilted Ji Heng's chin, rubbing it with a touch that was hardly gentle.
Sima Yue asked, "Does Your Highness still mean what you said back then?"
Ji Heng swallowed the metallic taste in his throat and collapsed onto the bed, unable to explain himself.
So fate had granted his wish. Why did it have to be this wish?
