[The main story is told from the heroine's perspective; the hero transmigrates]
An alternate Wei-Jin setting, a battle for the realm and a romance with a stand-in
The hero transmigrates into a supporting male character who serves as background in a male-oriented tale of conquest: Xiao Jiuci, the hapless crown prince of Great Wei.
During his reign, his father did nothing but indulge in food, drink, and pleasure, leaving him a colossal mess to deal with.
Once his father kicked the bucket, the eager maternal relatives, eunuchs, aristocratic clans, and vassal princes would take turns seizing power, plunging the realm into chaos.
According to the original story, the original hero, the Prince of Langya, would take advantage of the turmoil to bring down the Xiao family's Wei Dynasty and poison the Xiao clan's descendants. Xiao Jiuci was one of them.
Fortunately, Xiao Jiuci transmigrated early. The hero, who would one day shake the world, was only fifteen this year. He was still the Prince of Langya's heir, currently in the palace as a hostage by imperial decree and under Xiao Jiuci's control.
To prevent future trouble, Xiao Jiuci went straight to the heir's residence with his men and ran him through with a sword.
Only after he came to his senses did Xiao Jiuci realize something was wrong... Why was the heir a girl?
He'd stabbed the wrong person.
It turned out the Prince of Langya couldn't bear to send his son to the capital, so he had his daughter disguise herself as a boy and take his place. She was Wang Heshuang, the hero's twin sister.
She was also a notorious villain in the original story. This dear sister had repeatedly thwarted her brother's rebellion, only to bring ruin upon herself in the end. Like him, she died without a proper burial.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. After rescuing her, Xiao Jiuci extended an olive branch: "I know you hate your brother. Let's work together. Once we've killed them all, I'll make you a princess in your own right. How does that sound?"
The villainous young lady was just as eager to make trouble. She thought it over for a moment, then nodded firmly.
In the many years that followed, Xiao Jiuci was deposed, imprisoned, and brought to the brink of death before being driven from his homeland. Wang Heshuang remained at his side, helping him rise again. Together, they destroyed the powerful clans, put down rebellions, and claimed the Central Plains.
At first, Xiao Jiuci thought: This woman is full of schemes and cruel to the core. If I don't keep an eye on her, she'll be trouble. Once I've finished using her, I'll cast her aside. When the birds are gone, the bow is put away.
Later, Xiao Jiuci held her in his arms and pleaded softly in her ear: "He Niang, will you be my empress?"
Wang Heshuang always looked at him as if in a daze, as though she were looking at someone else.
Xiao Jiuci never asked, and didn't dare to.
It was said that the youngest daughter of the Wang family had once been betrothed to the crown prince as his consort. She and the original owner of this body had been childhood sweethearts, innocent and inseparable.
Later, the engagement was annulled. While she was being held hostage, the foolish crown prince still carefully protected her identity.
Once, he had accidentally wandered into her rear courtyard and seen the grave she had made beneath the plum tree, complete with clothes and a hat in place of the foolish crown prince's body.
Later, everyone praised His Majesty for cowing the four seas with his imperial might and winning the hearts of the realm.
But Xiao Jiuci alone knew that he had won over everyone in the world, yet never gained one person's heart.
A deposed crown prince who loves making trouble & an even more troublesome young lady from a villainous aristocratic clan
The hero is a jerk, and he has a bit of a love-addled brain, so he will definitely have to suffer through a long road to winning his wife back. But the heroine is ambitious too, and will stab him in the back now and then. They'll love and fight each other all the way to the end.
