The Liu family, the wealthiest household in Shengyang City, had enjoyed a century of glory before collapsing overnight.
With the family fallen into ruin, the Liu family's youngest daughter, Liu Ruoxi, as delicate and beautiful as a flower, ended up in the pleasure quarters. She became a singer at the Fragrant Fate House, where she was later redeemed by Pei Ziqian, heir to the household of the current Minister Pei, and brought back to the Pei residence.
Pei Ziqian was born to privilege. Handsome and refined, he was a man of exceptional talent, a noble young gentleman whose name was known throughout the capital.
Everyone said that Second Miss Liu was lucky: when her family fell into ruin, the heir to the Pei family came to her rescue, bringing her into his household as his concubine.
Only Liu Ruoxi knew the truth. Pei Ziqian and her elder sister, Liu Ruoyun, had been childhood sweethearts, but they had never become a couple. Three years ago, Liu Ruoyun married into the Kingdom of Zhao. Now Pei Ziqian was simply treating Liu Ruoxi as her sister's substitute.
So Liu Ruoxi kept to her place as a substitute, obedient and sensible, serving the young master Pei with all her heart. By day, she kept him company as he read; by night, she warmed his bed and fanned him to sleep.
Two years later, news arrived that her elder sister had been widowed. Pei Ziqian immediately decided to set out for the Kingdom of Zhao and bring Liu Ruoyun back.
Before he left, Liu Ruoxi showed no displeasure at all. Smiling, she made all the arrangements for Pei Ziqian's journey.
A month later, Pei Ziqian returned from the Kingdom of Zhao with Liu Ruoyun, only to hear that Liu Ruoxi had already passed away.
The composure and arrogance Pei Ziqian had always maintained shattered. His eyes reddened, and the madness he had kept suppressed spilled out.
