Little Blue, the Rescue Plane

The story of Xiaolan, a rescue plane who makes a good friend and grows into an excellent rescue plane.

When my daughter Xiangxiang was a little over three, she drew a plane in her art class. I think the teacher read a picture book about a rescue plane going into the forest to save Peppa Pig. Parents weren't allowed in the classroom, so I don't know exactly what story they heard before drawing. I only caught the gist during the last part of class, when the children shared their ideas about their pictures. The other kids all said the rescue plane could put out fires and go into the forest to save Peppa. But when it was Xiangxiang's turn to talk about her drawing, she said her plane was called Xiaolan, and Xiaolan couldn't put out fires. The teacher asked what the plane was going to do in the forest, then. Xiangxiang said it wanted to find a friend.

So I used her drawing to make up this story for her.

Just as she imagined, this rescue plane named Xiaolan goes into the forest to find a friend. Of course, I also need to tell Xiangxiang that even if a rescue plane goes to find a friend, it mustn't neglect its real job. And making friends isn't just about playing together: friends should help and encourage each other, and grow together. Good friends help you become a better person. That's what friendship means.
