In the summer of her second year of high school, she had a crush on someone.

That person was the son of the family she was staying with. His name was Lin Yuye.

He was heaven's favorite. She was dust in the clouds.

She knew the gulf between them was vast.

In silence, this carefully hidden crush swelled like a raging tide, destined never to see the light of day.

But he was the one who crossed the line first.

They shared a rare Christmas snowfall in each other's arms, walked hand in hand through Pattaya's pale blue waves, and sat on the balcony listening to Hikaru Utada's First Love.

There were also times when, just before sunset on a midsummer day, he held her face and kissed her.

A long, wild kiss that left her breathless.

But later, Shen Huandi forgot it all.

She forgot the intimate moments she had shared with Lin Yuye amid the vast sea of humanity, and she forgot the summer flight he took when he left.

It hardly ever snows in Nancheng.

But this Christmas, the snow fell thick and white.

At the intersection in front of Nanzhong,

Shen Huandi looked up, the light scattering beneath her feet, and met someone's gaze.

He stood across the road, dressed in black and covered in snow. His gaze was so ardent that she felt she had seen it somewhere before.

The traffic light turned green.

Footsteps, like cicadas singing, crossed the winter winds and snow, traveled through the summers of years gone by, and reached her ears.

Then came Lin Yuye's voice:

"Shen Huandi."

"Have you found the first page of the secret?"

"If you haven't,"

"then let me confess to you once more."

Before the college entrance exam, Jiang Qidie stands at the door of her mother's new boyfriend's home and listens as her mother introduces him warmly:

"Qidie, this is Zong Ying."

"As his older sister, you should look after him."

Qidie lifts her chin and looks at him timidly.

The tall, pale young man inside wears a gentle expression, but his eyes are cool and indifferent.

For a long time, the two maintain an unspoken relationship that is both intimate and distant.

Until that one time...

On a sweltering, rainy night, the house is hot and damp.

In the middle of the night, Qidie hears a noise and opens the door. It's Zong Ying.

"There's no air conditioning in my room. Can I sleep on the floor in yours?" Zong Ying asks, holding a quilt, looking aggrieved.

Feeling guilty and soft-hearted, Qidie agrees.

But somehow, little by little, Zong Ying stops sleeping on the floor.

Later, on every night their bodies entwine, the old wooden window creaks in the wind. The adults' late-night conversations drift in and out, and in the stillness of the night, his warm breath brushes so close to her heartbeat, then recedes.

In their first midsummer at university, everything suddenly spirals out of control and changes.

So Qidie immediately gets a boyfriend and uses him as an excuse to move out.

The next time she sees Zong Ying is also on a stormy day. He's dressed in a suit, keeping his distance; she's drenched and disheveled. Before she can even exchange greetings, she faints.

The dim room is dark, lush, and intoxicating.

Qidie finally frees her wrists from the slender straps binding them to the bed's headboard. She sees herself in the photos covering the walls, from an awkward girl to a mature woman, the little things she'd thrown away in a woven basket, and the love letters other people had given her...

With a cold expression, she slaps him and says, trembling, "Don't do this."

"Big Sister, you're so cruel. From university to the start of our careers, you abandoned me for five whole years." Zong Ying tilts his head and touches the burning handprint, accusing her plaintively.

Then he suddenly smiles tenderly. "As compensation, can I tell them we've been sleeping together since long ago?"

--"Wanting you to belong to me is what they call coveting."
