Tao Yao first met Gu Huaijing at her mentor's home. He sat beneath a tree, graceful and composed, while pale pink peach blossoms fluttered onto his shoulder. "What's your name?"

In the clear tea, the reflection of a girl with lovely brows and hair rippled into view.
Gu Huaijing chuckled softly. Behind him, dusk settled over green clouds and flowering trees.
On a midsummer day, Tao Yao waited for a bus with her schoolbag on her back. Gu Huaijing approached at an unhurried pace. "Want me to give you a ride?"
She blinked. "Sure."
Later, she went abroad to study. Before leaving Beijing, Tao Yao told a friend, "You mean Mr. Gu? I was just using him as a ladder to climb to success. There's nothing to miss."
Four years later, on a stormy summer night,
Tao Yao finished working late and hesitated outside the building. A black Audi pulled up in front of her.
This time, Gu Huaijing didn't get out. Through the heavy rain, he told the driver, "Take her an umbrella. Ask her if she still needs that ladder to success."
