Exquisite Spring Poems

[A delicate, fairy-boned orphan girl vs. a crown prince who dares to defy Heaven] [Sister story to The Jinling Rain and Mist, Held Close]

In the spring of the twelfth year of Shenghe, an earthquake struck the outskirts of the capital. The earth suddenly split open, opening and closing in an instant to swallow everything. Strange and wondrous things appeared everywhere.

On her way home to visit her family, the Princess of Ying, who had been married for years without conceiving, adopted a three-year-old orphan girl in hopes of conceiving a child.

Though only three, the orphan was as lovely as spring snow and white plum blossoms, born with delicate, fairy-like bones. Perhaps the saying “hold a child to pray for a child” came true, because the year after the Princess of Ying adopted her, she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, and finally had the family she wanted.

An adopted daughter could never compare to a biological one. Even after being entered into the imperial family register, she could not escape being neglected and forgotten.

Fortunately, the little girl was content with simple things. All she wanted was an ordinary, peaceful life, but fate had other plans. When she came of age to marry, another storm arose.

Villains coveted her, petty people envied her. Her extraordinary beauty, without anyone to protect her, was like a child carrying gold through a busy market: danger lurked at every turn. By the end of it all, everyone in the imperial capital was wondering whether the young lady who had offended the great houses and severed ties with the prince's household would make it out safely.

But no one could have guessed that this lonely, helpless young lady, trapped between impossible choices, would eventually rise from the mud, ride in a splendid marriage procession, and be welcomed into the Eastern Palace as the Crown Princess.
