The Court Above the Clouds
[Preview Blurb]
When he was seventeen, the Sixth Prince, Xiahou Yao, went on an outing and was ambushed, narrowly escaping death.
Yuwen Yuan, son of the Grand Preceptor, rushed to his rescue. He lifted the sedan curtain with his sword and fell in love at first sight.
His Highness the Sixth Prince was famous as a sickly beauty, delicate as Lin Daiyu. Timid and weak-willed, he was terrified by the sudden attack. Trembling and wiping away tears, he clutched his chest and asked, "Who... are you?"
The young man on horseback, usually looking down on everyone, gazed at the weeping youth in the sedan. He gave a slight smile and reached out to comfort him. "...Your humble servant is Yuwen Yuan. I arrived late to save Your Highness. I beg your forgiveness."
At twenty-two, Xiahou Yao fought his way through every obstacle and was named Crown Prince.
That night, a figure entered the palace and pushed open the door before the Crown Prince's residence.
The powerful minister leaned against the doorframe, his smile bewitching. "Now that you've achieved your wish and become Crown Prince, shouldn't you... make good on the reward you promised me?"
The atmosphere was tender and intoxicating. Xiahou Yao sat on the edge of the bed and took off his crown prince's robe, revealing a small stretch of smooth shoulder. His voice was gentle. "Be gentle."
The newly appointed Grand Preceptor, always decisive and never one to suffer a loss, found himself unable to move before this alluring sight. His Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily. "..."
Years later, with Yuwen Yuan's help, Xiahou Yao successfully ascended the throne.
On the eve of the new emperor's coronation, Yuwen Yuan, the Regent who had ruled the court for years and risen to the highest rank, returned all his military authority and tiger tallies, bowing his head in submission.
The court was stunned, and the people debated the matter endlessly.
When something is out of the ordinary, there must be a reason. The calm before the storm never lasts!
The madman who once pointed his sword at the late emperor now obeyed the new emperor in everything. He gave him whatever he wanted and did whatever he asked. He even followed the new emperor around all day, coaxing and pleading with him to eat nourishing tonics and take care of his health.
At court, the Chancellor suspected that Grand Preceptor Yuwen was up to something. After all, "With Yuwen Yuan's ability and ambition, why would he willingly remain a mere subject?"
The assembled ministers nodded. "That makes sense."
When Yuwen Yuan heard this, he simply smiled. "A Yao is carrying my child. I only wish to make His Majesty smile."
