A sanctimonious, sweet-faced-but-scheming, slightly deranged, Light Saint boss who loves persecuting good people
After transmigrating to a continent of magic, Anice found herself saddled with a huge debt overnight. To pay it off, she studied and took exams at the academy during the day, then worked for a mysterious employer at night, laboring year-round without a break.
She couldn't help it. The continent of magic enforced the Laws of Light, which required witches to be licensed. Anyone caught working under the table without qualifications had to pay a fine. Flying brooms required a pilot's license, divination required passing a practical exam in the Thorn Marsh, and selling magic potions required an advanced potion-maker's certificate...
Studying alone was enough to give her a headache, but on top of that, her deskmate was out of his mind. He was the Light Saint, yet with a face that radiated God's love for all, he was always saying the most profoundly antisocial things. Even she, a dark witch, couldn't help feeling inadequate beside him.
One day, at a banquet held by the academy, everyone was required to pray to the Lord of Light before the festivities began.
Anice wasn't a believer in the Light. She blended into the crowd, intending to go through the motions. With her hands clasped and her mind elsewhere, she made a modest wish: Lord, if possible, I hope the world ends tomorrow.
Then she wouldn't have to work so hard to pay off her debt!
The next moment, the holy relic representing the Lord of Light began to glow faintly, and Anice heard a very familiar voice:
"Dear Anice, as much as I'd like to grant your wish, you still have to work for me tomorrow. Let's leave the end of the world until the day after. It depends on how well you do."
Anice: ???
She must still be dreaming. Otherwise, why would she be hearing things?!
Why did the Lord of Light sound exactly like that annoying deskmate of hers? No, why would the Lord of Light answer the prayer of a dark witch?!
