On the day of the introductory competition, Junior Sister Xixue arrived late for some reason and asked Yuan Yao to take her place for half a day.
Yuan Yao didn't want to get involved, but the other girl's earnest plea wore her down, so she took her sword and sat on the high platform.
After six rounds, the victor emerged from the Cloud-Climbing Stairway and knelt directly before Yuan Yao.
"This disciple, Sikong Jin, wishes to enter your tutelage. Greetings, Master!"
The young man had his dark hair tied high, his robes fluttering in the wind, and his eyes were full of reverence and anticipation.
Yuan Yao raised a hand to speak, but the Dao Qi Stone in her arms leaped out and landed in the young man's hand.
It had recognized its master.
Once Dao Qi had recognized its master, the bond was almost impossible to change, so Yuan Yao had no choice but to accept him.
When Junior Sister finally arrived, the young man realized he had mistaken her for someone else.
The famed Moonfrost Immortal of Tianxu was not Yuan Yao.
His expression changed at once, and he hurled the Dao Qi Stone to the ground.
"I don't acknowledge you! My master should be the Moonfrost Immortal!"
The whole hall erupted in an uproar.
-
Yuan Yao was solitary and taciturn, fond of being alone, and had no disciples.
Though she had taken Sikong Jin in by a twist of fate, she treated him with sincerity.
Bixiao Peak had few cultivation manuals, so Yuan Yao swallowed her pride and begged around for books.
Sikong Jin didn't want to learn swordsmanship, so Yuan Yao practiced Xixue's water arts and taught them to him instead.
When he damaged the sword she cherished as dearly as part of herself, Yuan Yao didn't hold it against him.
But Sikong Jin refused to acknowledge her and only wanted to become Junior Sister's disciple.
When the disciples were due to go down the mountain for training, Yuan Yao ignored his protests and forced him to take the Moonpivot Mirror with him.
Junior Sister Xixue understood the danger and urged her to think twice, but Yuan Yao waved her off.
"You're my only disciple, so naturally your safety comes first."
What Yuan Yao feared came to pass: Sikong Jin was ambushed during his training, and the Moonpivot Mirror saved his life.
Yuan Yao, however, suffered a backlash and had little time left to live.
Only the Blood Rakshasa could save her.
-
During his training, Sikong Jin received a letter from Yuan Yao telling him to bring the Blood Rakshasa back to the sect at once, but she didn't explain why.
Annoyed at her meddling, he deliberately delayed for a while. Then, on the way back, he somehow lost the Blood Rakshasa.
After returning to the mountain, Sikong Jin went straight to see Xixue and offered her the Youth-Preserving Grass he had carefully protected.
Xixue refused it and asked only about the Blood Rakshasa. When she learned it was lost, her face turned ashen.
"You heartless wretch, you've killed Senior Sister!"
-
When Yuan Yao learned the Blood Rakshasa was gone, she froze for a moment, but only said, "It seems this calamity was my fate," and let the matter rest.
Sikong Jin was filled with remorse. He knelt for a long time outside Yuan Yao's door, but she wouldn't see him.
Ten days later, as Yuan Yao's time ran out, she recalled the Dao Qi Stone.
"You never acknowledged me as your master. Now that our bond is severed, go and become Junior Sister's disciple."
With that, she shattered the Dao Qi Stone, the symbol of their bond, to dust. Then, as he watched in pale alarm, she coughed up blood.
Once Dao Qi has recognized its master, the bond cannot easily be broken, unless one party pays with their life.
"Master!" As she closed her eyes, Yuan Yao finally heard the words she had once longed to hear most. But by then, she no longer cared.
Reader's Guide:
A master-disciple story with a groveling redemption arc, and a second male lead who wins her over. He doesn't appear in the blurb. The first half of the main story may be infuriating, so prepare yourself before reading. That's all.
Theme: Loving yourself matters most
