When the City God Temple had just been built, a young red fox that had only recently gained awareness carried a peach seed into the temple's backyard and planted it. Every so often, it would come back to check on the tree, then leave once it was sure everything was all right.
The City God himself noticed this, but after seeing that it was just an ordinary seed, he decided not to interfere. He even let the peach tree remain. For the next hundred years, the City God never saw the little fox that had left the seed again.
He also asked Fude to help divine whether planting the tree there would cause any trouble. Strangely, Fude determined that the spot was just right for planting trees.
“Where did this peach tree come from?”
“A little fox brought it.” Cheng Huang remembered the little fox sneaking into the City God Temple to plant the peach seed, and couldn't help smiling. “What do you think?”
“Let it stay. It's just right.”
The City God kept the peach tree there from then on. A hundred years later, one day, he saw a young woman sitting in its branches. Her face seemed unfamiliar, but there was something familiar about her aura. Later, for one reason or another, they got to know each other, and she moved into the antique shop.
“I thought you didn't know I was the one who left the seed.”
The City God smiled and said nothing. He simply tapped her forehead with his folding fan. That said more than enough.
“Staying here with me will bring you plenty of trouble.”
“It was fated. Even if I left, I might still run into you at the next turn.”
“Any regrets?”
“None.”
