Me, a Nobody! Living in Constant Terror!

[A shameless, timid young man * A sinister, cunning general]

One is tough, the other a coward.

The Strange Cases of Qingfeng

Gou Xiaoren is an ordinary bricklayer. Destined to be poor for generations, he gets caught eloping with the second young lady of the Zhan family by the Greedy Wolf General, Zhan Xiaode, just as the general returns from the northern frontier. From then on, Gou Xiaoren becomes General Zhan's personal servant. He keeps him company in bed at night, gets scolded during the day, and gets kicked a couple of times whenever the general is in a bad mood.

The Gou family has been cowards for eighteen generations, with not a single ancestor's grave ever giving off anything but timid smoke. Gou Xiaoren is a born coward, and his luck is even worse. After only a few miserable days with General Zhan, he discovers that he's plagued by supernatural misfortune. First he encounters a wolf-headed corpse, then a ghost actor. To top it off, he writes a ghost ballad for the actor and nearly loses his life because of it.

Just when he finally survives the first ordeal, Qingdu is beset by the Ghost Mother and Rakshasa Bird. It's bad enough that the monstrous bird snatches children, but why does it take Gou Xiaoren's form to seduce his man... no, his general? Doesn't it know his general already has his own man? Gou Xiaoren is angry and scared, but all he can do is shed tears. The facts are right there: he can't beat anyone, so he can only glare helplessly. And then there's the enigmatic Collarbone Bodhisattva...

When Gou Xiaoren is no longer Gou Xiaoren, General Zhan gives him a wicked smile. Climbing over the wall every day is actually quite fun. Since Gou Xiaoren won't give in, he'll just have to steal him away and make him return to being his obedient coward.

Gou Xiaoren:

My luck was already terrible, so how did people figure I could help someone ascend to immortality and become emperor? Who can I even complain to?

They say to kill someone with a knife, but that's giving me way too much credit for being able to dodge one. I'm already scared half to death.

General, your humble servant is once again living in fear for his life today! Sob, sob, sob...

The bitter prison, the windswept sands of the northern frontier...
