Zong Yiyi's parents died under mysterious circumstances when he was nine. Since none of his relatives were willing to take him in, the nine-year-old Zong Yiyi was sent to an orphanage.
Now twelve, he was always well-behaved and quiet, but slipped out of the orphanage when the adults weren't looking.
A few days ago, he had seen something very strange on television, but it seemed no one around him could see it. Neither the news reporter on the TV nor the children nearby appeared to notice it.
It was a long, red thing, a bit like an earthworm, but enormous. Before long, lots of lines shot up from the ground and stuck to the red thing, which then fell over.
But nothing happened. Zong Yiyi let out a breath, and just as he thought he was safe, a piercing alarm suddenly rang out around him. It was an earthquake.
