Life is a boundless wilderness. Beneath it lie countless threads of cause and effect. Three thousand worlds flow side by side, and the river of time cannot be turned back. Some causes and effects follow one another, while others are hard to unravel, separated by a dream.
Thus, on the road to the underworld, beside the Bridge of Oblivion, a communications station serving all three realms came into being. Humans, demons, immortals, and gods all linger there, seeking release.
Chen Luo is the most beautiful ghost in the underworld, the most coldhearted, and the only ghost immortal to have clawed her way out of the Hungry Ghost Realm in six hundred years. Having lost her destiny, she became the only being in all three realms untouched by cause and effect, as well as one of the few keys capable of entering dreams of past lives.
Following those tangled and intricate threads of cause and effect, she stepped into the river of time:
A foreign-educated teacher who died in Shanghai, an isolated city in 1937, and a maid doing odd jobs at the biggest pleasure house in the city;
A great demon of the cat world who lost an eye while taking human form during a trial in the mortal realm, and a girl who rescues stray animals;
A frail princess living in a castle, and a healthy but impoverished academic genius who spends her whole life unlucky and serving as the princess's blood supply;
And the little empress Chen Luo had thought of constantly, unable to forget for six hundred years.
Among the many threads linking people across time, Chen Luo always happened to brush past one person. And the communications station, suspended for six hundred years, finally welcomed a new director after Heaven announced its decree.
The order had been given, but the director still hadn't taken up the post. The staff waited and waited, only for Heaven's decree to turn out to be a huge mistake: the new director was a living human. With no other choice, they sent someone into her dream to invite this living person into the underworld and install her in the position.
The new director held the Book of Fate in her left hand and the Judge's Brush in her right, judging cause and effect and untangling the threads of fate. From then on, the tangled threads fell into order, and the ties that needed to be renewed and debts of fate that needed to be repaid all found their way forward.
The river of time Chen Shang entered was no longer a still image. At last, someone would help set right the destiny she was afraid to touch and change.
A cold, beautiful, and aloof ghost immortal with peerless martial prowess, like a god of war, as the receiver x A gentle, rational director who feels deeply yet seems heartless, as the pursuer
This is a revised and expanded version of the previous blurb. The central premise has changed a little, and the story leans toward an ensemble cast.
Content warning: The threads of fate are dramatic and may involve family, romantic, friendly, and benevolent ties, so there may be some heterosexual romance, though not much.
