After transmigrating, Yu Weinian became a young widow fleeing famine.

The court wouldn't help, and no local government would take them in.

With starvation staring them in the face, Yu Weinian waved her hand and said, "Come on, I'll take you all to the Northeast. We'll experience that paradise where you knock down roe deer with sticks and scoop up fish with gourds."

As soon as Yu Weinian said this, some cursed her, some mocked her, and others struck at her sore spots.

But Yu Weinian couldn't care less. She didn't want to wait around to die. She wanted to find a way to survive.

In the end, sixty-one people were willing to follow her north and gamble on finding a way to live.

And so, a group of ragged refugees set out from the Central Plains, heading northeast to Youzhou.

A year later, after crossing mountains and rivers and enduring countless hardships, they finally arrived in Youzhou Prefecture.

The county office secretary said, "Welcome to Liao'an County. Pick whichever plot of land you like, mark it off, and build your homes. You won't have to pay taxes on the farmland you reclaim for the first five years."

Hearing this, everyone wept with joy. At last, they had homes and a place to belong.

They chose a plot, broke ground, built houses, and dug fields, establishing Liyang Village.

They hunted in the mountains and gathered wild ginseng.

They reclaimed land and grew grain, and fished in the sea for freshwater pearls.

They had more than enough food and warm clothes, and their purses were bulging, too.

Xu Si: "When you think about it, just a few years ago we were begging for food everywhere!"

Chen: "You can say that again. We have Miss Yu to thank for listening to her and following her beyond the passes."

Old Liu: "Quit eating and chatting. Weian's heading to the county seat to deliver goods in a bit. Everyone, gather up the mountain delicacies and pelts you want to sell."

Listening to everyone's laughter and looking out at the vast black soil, Yu Weinian smiled with quiet satisfaction.

She had bet right!
