Slow burn, slow burn, slow burn!
The plot is very cliched! Very cliched! Very cliched!
From primary school through high school and into the working world, people came and went from Su Yu’s life. But there was one person who never left.
That person was Xu Yingze.
Just like his name, he was always by her side, a constant presence who had become part of her daily life.
Going to and from school; getting rides to and from work; eating together; talking things out, and so on.
They were even closer than most couples.
Xu Yingze had always thought that the most special place by her side belonged to him, and that she would belong to him, too.
He liked her.
She liked him, too. There was no doubt about it.
Until high school, when the top student and campus heartthrob tried to compete with Xu Yingze for the title of top guy in their grade by pursuing Su Yu, hoping to make him jealous. On Confession Day, Su Yu threw up all over him in front of the whole school...
Only then did Xu Yingze realize that things might not be as he had imagined.
Su Yu had a hidden condition.
Whenever a man pursued her, she would feel sick all over and be unable to stop herself from retching.
This discovery silenced Xu Yingze just as he was about to confess out of anxiety.
And so he remained silent for years.
Whenever a rival appeared by her side, Xu Yingze would taunt him: “I can be close to her in all kinds of ways. I can hold her hand and put an arm around her shoulders. I’m the only one she won’t shy away from. But can you do that? What do you have to compete with me?”
One person just laughed and said, “So what? In her eyes, I’m still at least a man. But what about you?”
“You can get close to her and do all sorts of things with her, things that wouldn’t look out of place even between a couple. But in her eyes...”
“You don’t even qualify to sit at the table.”
Xu Yingze liked Su Yu.
It was something you knew, I knew, and he knew, but...
She didn’t know
and she never could.
Thanks to Feng Wan for the cover background.
Content warnings:
1. To fully develop the characters, there will be a lot of chapters from the hero’s point of view, as well as plenty of childhood scenes early on. Please avoid this story if that bothers you.
2. The heroine doesn’t come from a good family, and she isn’t a pampered princess, but she is self-reliant and determined. Please avoid this story if you’re sensitive to family background issues.
Looking for a fresh narrative angle in a fairly old-fashioned plot.
A writing and character-interaction exercise. Free until completion.
