Junzhu Wang Junfu of the Yining commandery was a widow. Three years into her widowhood, her mourning period ended in the fourth month, and by the fifth, she had accepted a proposal. The people of Chang'an were abuzz with gossip.
A widow remarrying was nothing unusual. What people gossiped about was that Wang Junfu's fate was too harsh: she was said to bring death to her husbands.
Her first husband had fallen gravely ill and died in the third year of their marriage, at no more than twenty years old.
The Cui family's third son, whose hand she had just agreed to, had always been in robust health. Yet on the way to Chang'an, he suddenly came down with a strange illness. After lying unconscious for days, he had only just woken up, and reportedly couldn't even get out of bed.
Tell me, what else could a woman like that be but a husband-killer?
When the rumors reached Wang Junfu, she was already unhappy with the match. In a rage, she smashed a jade cup and roared, "That useless thing has made everyone talk about me! I'll peel a layer of skin off him when I see him."
When the time came to meet, Cui Xianrong had just recovered from his illness. He wore a deep robe, and his face was strikingly beautiful in its pallor. Taciturn and seemingly absent-minded, he somehow ended up stumbling into a pond in front of everyone.
The onlookers exchanged glances and suddenly understood: it really wasn't Yining Junzhu's fault. Cui the Third simply didn't know what was good for him.
Wang Junfu managed to swallow her anger.
After they married, Cui Xianrong treated her with the utmost care. Wang Junfu found that they unexpectedly got along, and thought it wouldn't be so bad to carry on like this.
Whenever the subject of her deceased first husband came up, she would brush off the other man's questions without even looking up. Yet he would stare at her, dazed, as if he wasn't satisfied with her sweet words.
One afternoon, Wang Junfu closed her eyes to rest. Cui Xianrong mistakenly thought she was asleep and murmured softly beside her, "Xiaocai..."
Aside from Wang Junfu and her dead first husband, no one else knew that name.
Before you read:
1: The heroine has a bad temper and a stubborn mouth but a soft heart. She's a very kind girl.
2: They both love each other. It should be quite sweet, though there may be a little angst.
3: The heroine is twenty-three at the start. The hero was twenty before he died and is seventeen after coming back to life. There is a body-swap resurrection plot, so it has a transmigration tag.
Entirely fictional setting. The story takes the dross and discards the essence. Think of it as a paramecium typing. If you're looking for historical accuracy, this isn't for you.
I changed my planned story. I originally wanted to write a sweet little romance about cousins, but I couldn't make it work. I'm truly sorry.
Theme: May we find one heart to share, and stay together until our hair turns white
