Zelan was sixteen when she learned she was not the daughter of a fisherman, but a young lady of the Yu family in the capital.
She climbed into a luxurious carriage and arrived in the bustling capital. She had thought her family would welcome her with tears of joy, but it turned out to be the beginning of a nightmare.
After she disappeared, Madam Yu gave birth to another child. Unfortunately, her health was frail, and now that Zelan had been found, the family only wanted her to give up her life to keep their youngest son alive.
Unable to escape, Zelan died in a dark water prison.
[2]
When she opened her eyes again, she was back in the familiar fishing village, and the Yu household had yet to find her. Zelan immediately packed her things and prepared to flee, but with no travel money, her attempt ended in failure.
She tried to run away again and again. Sometimes she ran out of money halfway there; other times, her adoptive parents caught her and beat her viciously. With the Yu family about to arrive, Zelan set her sights on the man she'd found by the seaside a few days earlier.
She had saved him in her previous life, too. Only later did she learn that he was the all-powerful regent. After thinking it over, Zelan decided to go all in.
When the man, who had been unconscious for a long time, woke up, Zelan lay beside him with her clothes disheveled. Her eyes were red, red marks bloomed across her neck, and she looked ready to burst into tears as she demanded that the newly awakened man take responsibility.
Fu Yu'an looked at the young woman whose story was full of holes and smiled. "Of course I'll take responsibility."
Zelan successfully escaped the fishing village and followed the man to the capital. She had attached herself to the regent only to escape. Now that she'd made it out, she began plotting to earn some travel money and run away.
She hadn't expected the regent to be such a stingy, domineering devil. He not only docked her monthly allowance, but also forbade her from going out to earn money.
Zelan struggled to earn money wherever she could. Before she'd made much, she heard that the Yu family was making a huge fuss while searching for their long-lost daughter.
Panicking, Zelan quickly dug her money box out from under a tree. Without even checking whether she had enough, she hugged it and ran.
Unfortunately, she hadn't been out in the world for long before she was dragged back to the regent's residence.
If she could run away once, she could certainly do it again. Zelan rubbed her hands together, eager to try. But just as she reached the door, a tall figure blocked her way. She looked up in fright and saw the regent gazing down at her, coldness radiating from him. "What are you doing?"
Without a word, Zelan darted around him and ran. She hadn't gone far before someone scooped her up around the waist.
The man tossed Zelan onto the bed. His voice was icy. "It seems I gave you too much allowance, if it made you think of running away."
Later, Zelan covered the conspicuous marks on her neck and wept miserably. She regretted it. The regent's residence was not a place one could enter so easily.

Xiyuan had someone she loved: Shen Jun'an, the Huai'an Gentleman, dressed in a pale green robe and as graceful as a jade tree. His title had been bestowed by imperial decree.
He was perfect in every way, except that he did not like her and spent every day trying to break off their engagement.
On the day their engagement was called off, Xiyuan tried to change his mind, but all she got was this:
"Third Miss Yu, please have some self-respect. No matter what you do, I will never like you."
The engagement between the Shen and Yu families became the talk of the town, and Xiyuan became a shameless woman in everyone's eyes.
On the day Shen Jun'an got engaged, Xiyuan went to the outskirts of the city to clear her head and accidentally fell off a cliff.
When Xiyuan woke up, she had lost all her memories and had become Tian Erniang, who worked at the Tian family's tofu shop in Tong'an Town.
One day, Xiyuan found a man at the shop's entrance. He knew nothing about himself and, like her, had lost his memories. So the Tian family's tofu shop gained a man named Atong, joining Tian Erniang.
Atong was tall and handsome, one of the finest-looking men around. He was willing to do anything for his lifesaver, Xiyuan.
Xiyuan found herself a new love.
On the day she married Atong, a stranger arrived at the wedding to cause a scene. The noble young man had red eyes and gazed at Xiyuan with deep affection, claiming to be her fiancé.

Shen Xuan spent eighteen years living as Shen Jun'an's shadow. Outsiders knew only of the Shen family's young master, Shen Jun'an. No one knew there was a second young master, Shen Xuan.
Everyone said the Huai'an Gentleman was exceptionally talented. No one knew that every stroke of his writing came from Shen Xuan's hand.
To Shen Xuan, there was nothing left in the world worth caring about besides his mother. He never expected a girl to barge so unreasonably into his life.
An umbrella held over him in the rain, and the words, "Happy birthday, little beggar." …
Later, Shen Xuan often watched a girl from the shadows. She was his older brother's fiancée, and her eyes held no one but his brother.
The girl he wanted to cherish in the palm of his hand was someone his brother had discarded like trash.
At last, Shen Xuan found an opportunity to turn his older brother's fiancée into his own wife.
"Since Elder Brother doesn't want to marry her, don't blame me for taking her away."

How could a fish girl from a small fishing village know how to read?? This is a big bug in many ancient novels. No matter how miserable the heroine is, she can still read, but she can't figure it out.
