Su Jie was certain she was unlucky. She had studied diligently, only to scrape into a middling university. Right after graduating, she joined the workforce as an office drone, where her boss hounded her about 996 being a blessing and 007 being even better suited to young people striving to get ahead.

At long last, she played a city-building game to unwind, only to die of cardiac arrest from prolonged overwork.

She had thought she could finally rest in peace and lie flat forever.

But fate played a cruel joke on her.

When she opened her eyes, a row of pitch-black, scrawny skeletons stood to her left, their grinning jaws studded with a few huge teeth. They pleaded with her to give them a little more time before collecting their taxes, promising they would pay the arrears as soon as possible. Their overpowering bad breath nearly sent her out of this beautiful world all over again.

To her right, a huge, gleaming blue holographic panel displayed her name, with a countdown to the end of her life ticking toward zero.
