Huai Jiaoran stayed up all night reading a novel and died in bed. When she opened her eyes again, she had transmigrated into the book as the spoiled, delicate supporting female character who shared her name.
In the original story, Huai Jiaoran was beautiful and mild-mannered. At seventeen, she was tricked by her relatives and neighbors into marrying a smooth-talking young man sent to work in the border regions, and went with him.
Huai Jiaoran was delicate by nature. How could she stand such a harsh climate? On top of that, her husband was sleeping around with everyone. By thirty, she was worn down to a sickly, gaunt shadow of herself, and died of a serious illness just a few years later.
The moment Huai Jiaoran woke up in her new body, she firmly turned down the young man's marriage proposal.
When everyone found out, they tried to talk her around. Her relatives urged her to marry a decent man as soon as she found one, while the neighbors warned that she'd never find anyone better if she let this one go.
Who could have guessed that Huai Jiaoran would suddenly change her ways, stop caring about saving face, and snap back at anyone who crossed her:
"If you love getting married so much, why don't you get married a few more times yourself?"
Huai Jiaoran quickly became infamous in the village for her audacity, picking fights with everyone and everything. Finally, one day, the village leaders arranged a blind date for her.
"Give her a rock-hard man and see if she can talk back to him!"
The first time she heard the name Huang Chenglei, Huai Jiaoran thought he was a bricklayer.
She later learned that although he came from humble beginnings, he had earned one outstanding military achievement after another. He'd become a regimental-level officer while still young.
He was handsome, too. Everything about him was great, except for his stubborn personality. At twenty-six, he still hadn't sorted out his marriage prospects.
With the military district about to be reorganized and Huang Chenglei soon to be stationed in Jiangnan, his mother was pressuring him harder than ever. That's what finally convinced him to agree to meet someone.
Huai Jiaoran wasn't impressed at first. When they met for their blind date, she immediately launched into a long string of retorts.
She thought the stubborn mule would argue with her to the bitter end. Instead, after a long pause, he finally blurted out, "You're so cute."
Huai Jiaoran: "...?"
I'm scared, I'm scared...
Huang Chenglei: "Trying to run away?"
Haven't you heard I'm a famous stubborn mule? When I set my sights on one tree, I hang myself from it and never let go.
