Blurb:
Pei Qingyue was born into a noble family and was outstanding in both looks and character. Countless young men in all of Shengjing admired her, but only Third Young Master Rong passed all three of her tests. He was a devoted lover, willing to give up his family and reputation for her.
Pei Qingyue wanted for neither glory nor wealth, so she rejected an imperial marriage arrangement and resolutely married down.
Unfortunately, this love fell apart after the Pei family was convicted of a crime.
Third Young Master Rong's career suffered, and he resented and hated her. He tormented and humiliated her, schemed to take the lavish dowry she'd brought with her, and finally sent her to her death with a dose of poison.
The excruciating pain of her insides being eaten away by the poison was carved into Pei Qingyue's bones. Even after her soul drifted free, she saw Third Young Master Rong weeping over her coffin at her funeral, earning himself a reputation as a benevolent and devoted gentleman. Now even her heart, liver, and lungs ached with hatred.
When she opened her eyes again, she had returned to the first year of her marriage into the Rong family.
Her maid cautiously advised her, "Things are so difficult now. Why not get a divorce?"
Pei Qingyue touched her aching chest and sneered. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
For this kind of hatred, this kind of grudge, the only outcome she could accept was for her husband to die!
*
Just as Pei Qingyue was making waves, seeking justice, and taking revenge, Third Young Master Rong suddenly changed his ways.
He became resolute and forceful, clinging to her even if it meant bending his back and breaking his bones. He even helped her clear the Pei family's name and joined forces with her against the Rong family.
In the middle of the night, he ground his teeth and wept, yet still repeated the words he'd said years ago: "I have only you, and I want only you... I deserve to die."
Pei Qingyue indulged him in no way. With a gentle smile, she stabbed him. "Then go ahead and die."
Notes: 1. The male lead is a hypocrite and a villain, though he truly comes to his senses after being reborn. But this couple will not end up together. 2. Whether the younger, puppy-like second male lead gets the girl will be decided by a vote about halfway through the story. 3. Whatever the vote's outcome, the second male lead will remain faithful to the female lead. 4. The male and female leads never consummated their marriage, in either their past or present lives.
The General's Crematorium: A True Account
Yun Mei and Huo Xi were childhood sweethearts who loved each other and were engaged from a young age.
But the tides turned, and the Huo family was framed. Before they were sent into exile, Yun Mei was forced to break off her engagement to Huo Xi. She sent him money through her maid, along with a letter pledging her unwavering devotion. But after she waited for three years, Huo Xi returned to the capital with honors. What awaited Yun Mei was his cold indifference and his request to marry the maid who had served her.
To Yun Mei, nothing could be worse than the world collapsing around her, but her trials were far from over.
Her family was destroyed, and she was forced into a brothel.
That night, he was vicious, venting his hatred for her abandonment and humiliating her without restraint. He even covered her mouth and sneered coldly. "What do you want to say? Beg me to save the Yun family? Or that the money Yuewei took was yours, and you were the one who told her to write me letters every month?"
He didn't believe her at all.
Yun Mei was trapped, miserable and wishing for death, until she discovered his secret.
*
"General, do you remember? The mist was just as thin on the day we got engaged."
On an early spring morning, she coaxed him into remembering the past.
Suddenly, a cold glint flashed. Huo Xi caught the dagger she thrust at him, his face twisted with rage. "Are you trying to die?"
"I gave you my whole heart, General, and in the end, my family was destroyed. I deserve to die!"
With red-rimmed eyes, she thrust at him again with her other hand.
"Stop!"
Huo Xi shouted frantically toward the outside, but the crossbow bolt still came whistling through the air.
The dagger sank into flesh, and the bolt pierced her body.
*
In the second year after Yun Mei's death, on an early spring morning veiled in thin mist, Huo Xi saw a woman outside the city. Her gentle, affectionate features looked just like Yun Mei on the day of their engagement.
He chased after her like a madman, his heart in turmoil, afraid she'd say she had mistaken him for someone else. Her eyes were cold as she turned back and smiled at him.
"General, long time no see..."
She had not returned to rekindle their romance, but to continue the revenge she had left unfinished. He knew why she had come, yet was willing to drink poison to quench his thirst.
Notes: 1. Both leads are faithful to each other. 2. Both were deceived, and the story is full of dramatic, over-the-top angst. The male lead is vicious with his words and deeply resentful, but he was not responsible for what happened to the Yun family. There is more to the story. 3. There are sweet moments amid the heartbreak, though the male lead suffers more.
The Powerful Minister Has Been Plotting Against Me for a Long Time
Suisui was as soft and lovely as a flower, but she was raised deep within the Ye family's inner quarters, and few people knew of her. She had known since childhood that her birth was lowly. No matter how straight she held her back, all she could do was accept whatever came her way.
On the day she came of age, her childhood sweetheart came to propose, only to marry her legitimate elder sister instead, while continuing to pester Suisui. A poor-born top scholar was unwavering in his affection for her, but her half-sister took offense, and schemed against her both openly and in secret.
Suisui's life grew more and more difficult.
Then, one day, the ruthless powerful minister Song Jue came to visit, putting the Ye family on high alert. He gathered the Ye family together, pointed casually from afar, and said, "I don't want the one you mentioned. I want her..."
He "bought" Suisui, and the deal was done, money and goods exchanged.
Everyone assumed this living King of Hell had feelings for Suisui, but only she knew how much he disliked her. He even looked down on her when she forced herself to swallow food she didn't like.
"If you want something, go after it. If you don't want it, learn to refuse. If you can't refuse, run away. Accepting whatever comes your way is never the answer."
He picked up a dish she liked and taught her as he did.
But Suisui stared at his long, jade-like fingers, trembling as she thought: The rumors say those are the very hands that strangled the women who coveted him...
*
In his previous life, Song Jue saw a young woman throw herself into the river, but someone stopped her. He leaned against the railing and watched, only for the woman to smile resolutely before dying all the same.
"Tsk."
Song Jue was displeased.
As the emperor's blade, he bore countless deaths on his conscience, but he prided himself on never having shed innocent blood. Yet that young woman had died after taking poison he had given her.
He was a man of principle. He would never take an innocent life.
So after being reborn, the first thing Song Jue did was bring that young woman to his side.
To keep her from meeting the same fate, Lord Song had no choice but to rein in his temper and teach this woman who always accepted whatever came her way. Who knew that six months later, the first time she bared her claws, she would point a trembling finger at him and say, "Y-You, get out."
Lord Song, just about to climb into her bed and kiss the woman he loved: Tsk...
1. Both leads are faithful. Apart from being handsome, strong, and capable, the male lead is utterly useless, especially when it comes to his personality!
2. Both leads are reborn. The obsessive childhood sweetheart gets his comeuppance, and then some.
3. In theory, this is a sweet, heartwarming, healing romance.
Theme: Life needs a little bit of excitement.
