Synopsis:
Lihua has no parents. She was abandoned at the village entrance as a baby, and the kind villagers raised her together.
For fifteen years, she really did grow up carefree and happy.
Then one day, she had a dream.
In the dream, she saved a handsome man in the mountains. She had never seen anyone so good-looking. She willingly worked hard to earn money for his medical care, nursed his injuries, washed his clothes, and cooked for him.
At first, she thought that even if he couldn't become her child husband, she could at least count as his savior.
But in return, he confined her to a dark room.
He turned a blind eye as others caused the death of the child in her womb.
At the end of the dream, all she remembered was lying cold and lifeless amid the ruins. It was so, so cold.
Lihua woke up in fright.
*
After waking, Lihua thought it was just a dream.
Until one day, a schoolteacher came to the village. Wasn't that man the very same person from her dream?
Aside from looking a little older, he was practically identical!
Lihua was so startled that the candied hawthorn stick fell from her hand.
*
Only after Lihua resolutely took her own life right in front of him did Xie Yun learn that a heart could hurt so much.
How could she bear to... how could she bear to...
She had put so much effort into saving him. How could she bear to leave him?
When he saw her again, he wanted nothing else. He only hoped his girl could live in peace and happiness for the rest of her life.
As for him... he only hoped he could look at her, even if it was from far away, even if only for a moment.
That was truly all he wanted at first...
Bonus scene
Xie Yun carefully tells Lihua the story of what happened in the past. His restless fingers reveal how nervous and uneasy he is.
But after hearing the story, Lihua spits out, “What terrible luck.”
In a nutshell: Don't pick up men you find on the road, but it's fine to pick up women.
