The Little Widow's Daily Path to Wealth in the Eighties

#Family Life / Raising Kids / Starting a Business#

When jewelry designer Qin Shuyun opened her eyes, she had somehow become a young widow whose husband had just died in a period novel.

A skinny little girl knelt before her, with a little boy in her arms.

After years of being single, she was now the mother of two children.

She thought raising two kids would be hard enough, but her husband's family turned out to be a bunch of awful people!

Her eldest brother-in-law's family accused her and the children of being death-bringing ghosts. Her second brother-in-law's family eyed the money her husband had died earning, and her in-laws did nothing but complain about her...

In a fit of anger, she cut ties with them. She wasn't going to put up with their abuse!

But the house was bare, the rice jar was nearly empty, and the two children needed to be fed.

Life was certainly not easy.

Still, this was the 1980s, and the market economy was gradually taking off.

Qin Shuyun picked up a charcoal pencil and grinned. In that case...

It was time to show them what she could do!

Xu Sinian first met Qin Shuyun not long after returning to China, when he went into town to buy something for his older sister.

The woman stood beside a street stall, cheerfully telling her companion about her creations.

For some reason, he pushed his bicycle over to her.

And then, charmed by the dimples in her cheeks, he bought a whole lot of her delicate little crafts.

One late night, Xu Sinian was teaching the children to read by lamplight.

Qin Shuyun leaned over and asked with a smile, “The first time you came to buy things from me, you bought out my entire stall. Weren't you afraid I was cheating you?”

Xu Sinian shook his head. “No.”

“Because when you smiled as you told me about your things, you were glowing.”
