[Mad Tyrant x Proud Empress]
(1) Yan Wanqing was born into the Chancellor's family and raised from childhood to meet the standards of an empress.
She entered the palace at fourteen, took charge of the imperial seal, and became the model of virtue for all under heaven.
Outsiders only knew that Empress Yan was unrivaled in her authority. They didn't know that in their five years of marriage, the emperor had never once set foot in her Weiyang Palace.
The emperor liked fiery beauties. The more fiercely they resisted, the more he doted on them.
Though Empress Yan had skin like ice and jade, she was proud and delicate. The slightest scolding or twinge of pain could make her watery eyes glisten.
When her kingdom fell, Yan Wanqing refused to suffer humiliation. Barefoot, she climbed the city wall and leapt to her death.
When she opened her eyes again, she had become a canary kept at the side of a tyrant of a later dynasty, singing for him.
The tyrant was ruthless, plagued by nightmares.
Then a vassal prince presented him with a timid, cowardly canary. Though the bird was so frightened of him that tears streamed down its face, it still raised its voice and sang softly.
A heavenly melody drifted through the air, and for one night the tyrant slept soundly.
Amused, the tyrant locked the little bird in his bedchamber to help him sleep.
It sang by day and by night, until the little bird's heaven-given voice went hoarse and it became a mute little canary.
(2) On the first day after transmigrating, the tyrant set fire to the Hall of Government.
On the second day, he ordered people to dig up the ancestral graves of the previous dynasty's imperial family.
On the third day, he personally tore out his younger brother's tongue. As a splitting headache took hold, he remembered the little sleep-inducing bird he'd neglected for days.
The man wore a wide-sleeved black robe, with a flying dragon embroidered in gold thread, bold and unrestrained.
Fresh blood clotted at the corner of his eye. He flicked a finger toward Yan Wanqing. "Give me a couple of chirps."
Terrified, Yan Wanqing strained her voice, but all she could manage was, "Caw, caw!"
The heavenly music that had always sounded so lovely suddenly turned into a clanging racket. The man didn't get his help sleeping and had nightmares for two more days instead.
Later, the man discovered that the timid little bird wasn't only mute. It had also picked up all sorts of bad habits. It had taken over his imperial bed, and insisted on fine food and clothing.
Whenever the slightest thing displeased her...
Yan Wanqing tipped her head back, exposing her delicate neck.
Her slender fingers brushed her throat as tears rolled silently down her face.
