In the final years of the Great Qi dynasty, heroes rise to contend for supremacy. The Ziwei Star teeters on the brink, the realm lies divided, and the martial world is in turmoil.
A ghostly blade appears out of nowhere. People know only that its wielder is a woman. They do not know who trained her, nor her name or family name.
On a moonless, windswept night.
A white blade goes in, a red blade comes out. The old man with white hair and a crane's face, his robes stained with blood, draws his last breath. His voice is barely a whisper: "You... who are you, really...?"
The woman fixes him with a cold, unflinching gaze. "Yi Zhen, Level One Field Operative, Inspection Group Three, History Division, Capital Science Research Institute of Huaxia."

Yi Zhen is poor and unlucky.
Unable to afford tuition, she can only attend the police academy as a specially recruited student.
Burning with passion, she studies hard for four years. On graduation day, a notice sends her to the Capital Research Institute, where she becomes a specially appointed operative.
Yi Zhen: Can someone explain what an operative is?
Director: You know, like the civil servants you often see in web novels, the ones responsible for investigating transmigration incidents.
After that, Yi Zhen often lamented that out of that long explanation, she had only heard the last three words.
"A civil servant? With a permanent position? A stable salary? Benefits and pension?"
"All of that, plus meals, accommodation, and household registration."
"Deal."
Later, Yi Zhen transmigrates a thousand years into the past, racing for her life through the shattered river of time and risking her life with a blade in hand through countless shadowy nights.
Only then does she learn that her household registration is in Chang'an, and the meals and accommodation are provided there, too.
And Chang'an is full of danger, where she might not live to see another day.
As for her personal safety?
The director has this to say: "Life and death are fate, wealth and honor are in the heavens. Xiao Yi, if you happen to die, I'll be sure to burn plenty of paper offerings for you."

"Between the two great darknesses of past and future, with the ever-dying
present, you raised up the earth, thought, and glory,
the division between you and me, and all this loathsome world."
