This is the third month of Li Qi's voyage through space aboard the Mucor science expedition vessel.
The ship was supposed to have returned two months ago.
An unknown magnetic field has disrupted the ship's radar, and its supplies are nearly exhausted.
They have no choice but to make an emergency landing on a nearby planet and gather fresh crops and animal meat to sustain their daily energy needs.
Li Qi, a low-ranking clerk in the plant research lab, is forced to search the alien planet for edible crops.
Things are finally starting to fall into place, until a crew member dies under mysterious circumstances.
Panic spreads through the ship. The captain declares that he will lead everyone safely home.
Only he knows
that a monster wearing human skin has slipped aboard.
"At night, I'm even afraid to close my eyes."
He writes anxiously in his journal.
"I don't know where it will appear... the ventilation shaft, the end of the corridor, or beneath someone's split-open skin."
He decides to tell the captain the secret in private.
But when he knocks, the captain, who is always wearing a fake smile, greets him with perfect courtesy and a tender smile, looking at him like an old friend he hasn't seen in years.
...The captain has never looked him directly in the eye like this before.
No one knows when that monster got aboard the ship.
"Come here. I want to get a good look at you."
The monster says this with eyes as black and bright as night, as if it truly understands love at first sight.
