Four Thousand Seven Miles

In Liang Jingran's memory, he and Xu Xiangnan met three times after graduating from high school.

The first time was at a little bar by the Seine, just before Christmas Eve. The two of them were the only Chinese people there, and the enthusiastic French crowd pushed them into dancing a waltz together.

The second time was in New York in November. A cold wind was blowing, and Xu Xiangnan was wearing only a shirt. Just as she was about to sneeze for the third time, she suddenly felt the weight of a trench coat settle on her shoulders. She looked back, but Liang Jingran had already turned away, leaving only the words, "Don't catch a cold."

The third time, Liang Jingran went to New York for a university classmate's engagement party and saw Xu Xiangnan affectionately holding the arm of the man beside her.

During the first snowfall in Paris that year, someone posted a photo taken on Rue Montorgueil. It showed Liang Jingran leaning in to hug a girl, a huge bouquet of red roses in his hands.

That year, she bought a ticket to Liang Jingran's solo recital for the last time. It was a secondhand ticket she'd managed to track down through a Chinese student group.

"This year, I don't want to love you anymore."
