When the moon emerged from the dark clouds, the torrential rain finally stopped.
A boy in a black cloak stepped out of the corpse-driving inn. He glanced back, his handsome brows furrowing. When had a little tagalong joined his beautiful, bountiful group of corpses?
"You. Step out." Under the moonlight, the boy's jade-like finger beckoned to Yin Ya.
"I-I'm really good at pretending to be a zombie. Could you please not make me come out?" Yin Ya pleaded pitifully.
Her wicked stepmother was hunting her down. If she was caught and taken back, she'd be done for.
The boy tilted his head, his silver earring jingling. "But you really are a slow jumper."
The petite, fair-skinned girl clasped her hands like a cat and bowed. "Please bear with me."
The boy turned away, his face a little red. "Hmph, what terrible luck!"
He crouched down and patted his slender yet broad back. "Hop on."
They climbed mountains and crossed ridges along the way. As he carried her, she somehow went from his back to his chest.
The journey was arduous. Seeing them, the corpses hopped around in protest, refusing to accept it.
The boy bared his teeth at them. "Make another sound and I'll feed you to the poison bugs!"
-
The boy helped her get rid of her wicked stepmother and escorted her to the Prime Minister's residence in the capital.
She became a noble young lady, while he remained a lonely young corpse-driver.
The next day, under the pouring rain, he had to return to Miaojiang.
He crossed thirty-three mountains but still couldn't shake the little tagalong behind him.
Standing in the downpour, she shouted, "Young corpse-driver from Miaojiang, slow down!"
From the other side of the mountain, he called, "Aren't you afraid?"
She took off running toward him. "I'm not afraid. I'm the little tagalong on the corpse-driving road!"
