Film and TV AU. Please avoid if this isn't your thing.
In 203x, a TV drama called Y, focused on the history of the transition between the Northern and Southern Song dynasties, begins filming very quietly. After the supposedly dedicated actor Liu Guangshi reposts a Weibo post on April Fools' Day, the drama gradually enters the public eye and becomes a topic of discussion. The show was such a hit and received such good reviews that people got used to calling the actors by their characters' names.
"Oh my god... I'm a newbie who loves history, and I'm both excited and scared. This subject, and this show... Is it going to have another earth-shattering disaster we've never heard of before?"
"Does anyone have any insider gossip? Should we wait and see? I'm really afraid the higher my hopes are, the greater the disappointment will be."
"We're going to make a good show," said an investor whose name was never revealed.
During the Lunar New Year holiday of 203x+2, Y premieres. Within days, it receives rave reviews, and major film and TV accounts publish dedicated articles praising it. The production process, behind-the-scenes footage, actor interviews, and more are gradually made public.
"The production team worked so hard. You can tell how much care went into this."
"A truly great show, and thoroughly deserved!"
Basically, they're playing themselves, and the show's plot is just what happened in history.
I imagined a high-quality screen adaptation to make up for the lack of one, and turned it into this modern film-and-TV AU (or an entertainment-industry AU, perhaps? The whole story has just one main thread: study history properly and take filming seriously).
I can't explain the bug of characters having the same names, either. Let's pretend they actually have different names in this modern AU, but everyone calls each other by their character names in everyday life.
The story is told through forum posts, actor interviews, Weibo posts from different people, short stories from different perspectives, accounts of the production, and more, to show the plot and filming process.
Theme: A film and TV AU, using imagination to make up for the regret that history still hasn't had a screen adaptation we're truly satisfied with.
Re-reading the Shao and Song dynasties, I searched on a whim and found out that there is actually something to read. I look forward to filling in the gaps.
It's been 23 years, will Mrs. Baike consider filling in the hole?
