A Jigsaw Puzzle of Time

Everyone in the younger generation of the Lu family knew that they must never mention Li Zhiyan in front of Lu Qingxia.

But when Lu Qingxia agreed to go on a blind date, she discovered that the man her brother had raved about was none other than Li Zhiyan.

She kept her expression neutral, then used an excuse to leave the table. While away, she discovered that her brother was giving her advice.

[Met him yet? Make snide remarks, spend his money, and piss him off.]

Lu Qingxia was enlightened.

When she returned to the table, she immediately called over a waiter and ordered several bottles of the most expensive wine.

Li Zhiyan didn't even raise his eyes. Instead, he asked the waiter to add several desserts.

They were Lu Qingxia's favorite treats back in high school.

But when the desserts arrived, she wouldn't even spare them a glance.

"Why aren't you eating? Are you dieting?" Li Zhiyan asked.

Lu Qingxia replied meaningfully, "Mr. Li, you've been abroad for years, so you probably haven't gotten used to things here. A lot has changed over the years. My tastes have changed, too."

Li Zhiyan foolishly pressed on. "A lot of things... including people?"

Lu Qingxia didn't answer. She just smiled brightly and let him guess.

After dinner, Lu Qingxia asked Li Zhiyan to go shopping with her.

"Mr. Li, I heard that people like you give their ex-girlfriends a breakup payment after they split up."

She stopped outside a luxury boutique and asked, "Can I finally get what I was owed all those years ago?"

The summer Lu Qingxia transferred back to Jingcheng, she met Li Zhiyan for the first time.

He knocked her over while skateboarding below her apartment building.

Later, she learned that he had come to see her brother.

He was her brother's good friend, and he would also become her classmate.

In the chaotic, turbulent years of youth, Li Zhiyan was the only lifeline she had.

They got caught in the same rain, practiced with the same calligraphy workbook, painted the same blackboard display, and promised to attend the same university. But in their second year of high school, Li Zhiyan broke his promise.

He quietly went abroad without telling anyone.
