Qin Lin is a quiet, gentle, kindhearted country girl, but she also has a resilient side. She and Du Chengyu, an outstanding country boy two years her senior, grew up together. In Qin Lin's heart, Chengyu is an older brother, a teacher, and a friend! In the spring of 1978, Qin Lin's mother died of illness. Qin Lin, her younger brother Qin Ye, and her younger sister Qin Yao followed their father to settle at Gulf Farm. The night before they left, Chengyu and Qin Lin exchanged plastic-covered notebooks as keepsakes. From then on, Qin Lin and Du Chengyu were separated by distance. But they did not lose touch: they continued writing letters, encouraging one another and striving to improve. They worked hard to pursue their dreams of going to university. Through it all, their feelings for each other grew deeper. After graduating from high school, Du Chengyu got into a university in Xi'an, just as he had hoped, while Qin Lin moved on to high school. After Qin Lin graduated from high school, the two promised to stay hand in hand and grow old together! But just as Chengyu was about to graduate from university, an accident took his memory and severed their connection. Thus unfolds the story of the joys and sorrows, unions and separations of Qin Lin and Du Chengyu.
