At the end of the Qing dynasty, in Luoshui Village, Qingcheng County, Qin Yuexiang accidentally kills Sang Laosan while protecting her daughter, Caiqing. Magistrate Xiao Ruzhang takes advantage of the situation and draws Yuexiang's former master, Qingcheng's wealthy merchant Shen Yuan, who is Caiqing's birth father, into the affair. Runxue accompanies Caiqing as she carries Yuexiang's blood-written letter to Shen Yuan. Shen Yuan's wife, Yuru, confiscates the token, and Caiqing and Runxue enter the Shen residence as maids. They grow up alongside the eldest daughter, Shen Liuyun, and the second son, Shen Liunian. Liuyun makes things difficult for Caiqing at every turn, while Liunian secretly falls for her and is always there to protect her.
When the political situation changes, Xiao Ruzhang gives up his official post to go into business, but he never stops coveting the Shen family's fortune. His second son, Qingyu, hopes to marry Liuyun. To fulfill his son's wish and seize the Shen family's wealth, Xiao Ruzhang schemes to drive Shen Yuan into a desperate situation, intending to force him to give Liuyun in marriage. Just then, Liuyun's betrothed, Fang Shaoling, arrives from the provincial capital to discuss the wedding. He offers to help the Shen family out of its predicament, but in exchange, he wants to take Caiqing as his concubine.
Yuru is jealous that Shen Yuan still thinks of Yuexiang and refuses to let him acknowledge Caiqing as his daughter. When Caiqing accidentally discovers one of her secrets, Yuru wants her dead, but Xiao Qingyu saves her. Later, just as Shen Yuan uncovers the truth and is about to reunite with his daughter, he is killed. Yuru frames Caiqing, but Liunian risks his life to save her.
To preserve Liunian's standing in the family, Yuru tells Caiqing that Liunian is her half-brother. Heartbroken, Caiqing distances herself from Liunian and agrees to accompany Liuyun as part of her dowry, becoming Shaoling's concubine. Liunian, unaware of the truth, is plunged into misery and turns to his cousin, Wanqing. Liuyun suspects Caiqing of seducing Fang Shaoling and hurls insults at her. Unwilling to bear the humiliation, Caiqing takes Shaoling away before Liuyun can spend her wedding night with him. Liuyun is devastated.
Xiao Ruzhang demands that the Shen family honor their contract. Yuru offers Caiqing, passing her off as a Shen family daughter, as collateral to the Xiao family, where she becomes a lowly maid. Caiqing endures the humiliation in the Xiao residence, unable to forget Liunian. Qingyu mistakenly believes Caiqing is promiscuous and that she and her brother are involved, and he despises her.
Qingyu accidentally learns the truth and realizes he has misunderstood Caiqing. He begins to see her differently and agrees to let her help manage the business, taking a commission so she can buy her freedom. One day, while identifying an ancient zither, Qingyu is astonished to realize that his feelings for Liuyun were misplaced, and that the true kindred spirit he admires is Caiqing, right in front of him. To get Caiqing, Shaoling takes great pains to arrange for his younger sister, Xinyi, to marry Qingyu. Xinyi falls for Qingyu at first sight. Xiao Ruzhang, eager to ingratiate himself with a powerful family and find a patron, returns the favor by agreeing to give Caiqing to Shaoling as a concubine.
Liunian, now in full control of the business, suffers defeat after defeat in his struggle with Xiao Ruzhang. To put Caiqing at ease, Qingyu secretly helps Liunian out of trouble, but his elder brother, Hongyu, informs on him. Qingyu is severely punished by his father, and Caiqing's plan to buy her freedom is thwarted.
Qingyu senses that his father is hiding a plot that will harm Caiqing, so he acts first and gets her out of the Xiao residence. Qingyu uses retreat as a way to advance, agreeing to meet Xinyi, but falls into Xiao Ruzhang's trap. Fang Shaoling finds Caiqing with the contract Qingyu wrote, and Caiqing mistakenly believes Qingyu has abandoned her. In despair, she also pretends to yield to Shaoling in order to gain his support for the Shen family.
With Lin Yue and Liunian's help, Qingyu comes to his senses, uses a ruse in which he feigns injury, and escapes the Xiao residence to search for Caiqing in the provincial capital. But bandits rob him of all his money along the way, and he and his servant end up on the streets, making a living by selling paintings. After many twists and turns, Qingyu and Caiqing finally meet again. They later seize an opportunity to escape, but Shaoling sees through their plan and captures them all. Shaoling orders his men to kidnap Xiao Ruzhang to threaten Qingyu. In the ensuing clash, Xiao Ruzhang is killed by a stray bullet.
Liuyun and Caiqing put the past behind them. Liuyun secretly helps Caiqing and Qingyu escape, but as Shaoling pursues them, he accidentally injures Xinyi, who has come to see them off.
Shaoling blames Qingyu and Caiqing for Xinyi's injury, enraging Madam Fang, who wants to confront them. Shaoling threatens the Xiao residence with the charge of illegally stockpiling weapons. Madam Xiao takes all the blame and dies bravely. Dutiful Qingyu insists on turning himself in, and Shaoling forces Caiqing back to his side. At last, Shaoling holds the Caiqing he has thought about day and night once more!
But Caiqing has long since come to hate Shaoling. With a sweet smile, she drives a poisoned flower hairpin straight into his heart. Madam Fang rushes in, and Shaoling protects Caiqing to the very end. He shoots himself, telling Madam Fang to remember that he took his own life and not to harm Caiqing.
Madam Fang intends to have Caiqing buried with Shaoling, but Liuyun stops her, holding her young son in her arms. After all the hardships, she cannot bear to see anyone else die. Qingyu promises to do his duty and goes with Madam Fang to the provincial capital to care for Xinyi, who has yet to regain consciousness.
Caiqing and Qingyu wave goodbye. If love endures, what need is there to be together every morning and evening? They will both remain true to each other until the end…
