Where Longing Never Ends

I am the eldest legitimate daughter of the Liu family. My maiden name is Xiangsi. My name comes from "Spring at the Jade Tower," a poem by the great poet Li Song. The full poem goes: "Along the road to the pavilion, green willows and fragrant grass stretch on. In youth, people leave you all too easily. A fading dream above the tower, the fifth watch bell; beneath the blossoms, parting sorrow falls like March rain. A heart without love knows none of love's pain. One inch of longing splits into ten thousand strands. The ends of the earth and sky may one day be reached, but longing has no end." My father chose the two characters Xiangsi from the poem for my name. My younger half-sister, Zhi Lan, also once wrote a poem using my name as its title. It goes: "Red beans grow in the southern land. How many branches sprout when spring comes? I hope you gather plenty, for these are the most evocative tokens of longing." Even after reading widely, I never figured out exactly what kind of plant red beans are, but that didn't stop me from loving my name. My half-sister and I had a clash of ideas. And so, the story below came to be. This is a story about a woman from ancient times facing off against a transmigrated woman.
